Bruce became a good friend when we realized we had a lot in common in the way we looked at the world. I remember the night, probably in 1965, when I walked over to his home on Pine Street and he excitedly told me, "Pierre, you got to hear this guy, this folk singer named Bob Dylan." From that night on I became, like so many in our generation, mesmerized by the poetry, messaging and distintive voice and consciousness that was Dylan's. Bruce and I were also in a Unitarian youth group together that was not at all religious but was a force of social consciousness and activism in 60's New Orleans. Decades later, I am sitting on a dock (literally) down in Dangriga, Belize and started talking to some other visitors who happened to be from New Orleans. A small world, I long in California by then, but they were from the Anthropology Department at Tulane. They knew the Kings, the Fischers and I believe the Wauchopes. They knew my old friend Bruce, too.

Bruce was a joy to teach. He had a fine mind and refreshing perspectives. He played in a rock band, possibly with others in your class, right? Somehow I remember him and Walter Lamia trading fours during class discussions, which were at the heart of my experiences at Franklin. Memories that I'll treasure into the bardo, if threre is one.
