Since graduating, I attended Miami University, backpacked three months in Europe and moved to Boulder, Colorado where I joined Kinko's. In 1980, before I became a manager of a Kinko's in Madison, Wisconsin, I traveled for two months to the Far East and Southeast Asia. When I left Kinko's in 1984 to move to Malaysia I was a regional manager in charge of eleven stores in three states.
Before leaving the US, I traveled around the US, sold my car in California, and then flew to Italy and backpacked for seven months, making my way to Malaysia, arriving in July 1985. By then I had traveled to 36 countries.
For several years I did some freelance writing. My first book, Lovers and Strangers, a collection of short stories set in Malaysia, was published in 1993.
I began teaching creative writing and general English in 1996 at a university in Penang, where I lived for 21 years until I moved to Sarawak, on the island of Borneo to teach at another university. After 13 years, I'll be "retiring" from teaching full time in April 2010.
My second book, a revised version of my first, Lovers and Strangers Revisited (MPH 2008), won the 2009 Popular-The Star Reader's Choice Awards. My third book, Tropical Affairs: Episodes from an Expat's Life in Malaysia (MPH 2009) is a collection of creative nonfiction. My blog on writing, interviews and reviews can be accessed from my website http://www.borneoexpatwriter.com
