Dana R. Smith “Smitty” , age 76 of Granville, passed away on November 27, 2023 at the Selma Markowitz Center (operated by Hospice of Central Ohio.)
He was born on June 12, 1947 in Newark, Ohio to the late Dana L. Smith and Barbara Jean (Malloy) Hartley.
Dana was a 1965 graduate of Newark High School. Upon graduating, Dana answered the call to duty and enlisted in the Army, where he valiantly served during the Vietnam War. As a member of the 716th Military Police unit, Dana played a crucial role as a military policeman, demonstrating unwavering commitment and courage in the face of adversity. His selfless dedication to protecting our nation is a testament to his character and the values he held dear.
Following his honorable service in the military, Dana continued to exemplify the virtues of duty and sacrifice as a firefighter with the Newark Fire Department. For 27 years, Dana selflessly served the community, making it a safer place for all. In 1996, he retired from the Newark Fire Department, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and commitment to public service.
Dana was a loyal man and was married to his best friend for over 44 years, Barbara Connor. Dana was very lovable and had a great sense of humor. One of Dana's passions was the restoration of classic cars, a hobby that showcased his skill and craftsmanship. His love for these classic vehicles, especially Studebakers, reflected his appreciation for history and the beauty found in the art of preservation.
Dana is survived by his wife, Barbara Smith; daughter, Barbara “Barbi” (David) Pond; step-son, Rob Heptinstall; five grandchildren, Zachary Oder, Shae Heptinstall, Steven Heptinstall, Shawn Rostofer and Seth Rostofer; and six great-grandchildren.
