Mark was my neighbor two doors away... didn't know he'd passed away... I remember being the only girl on the block that he'd let up into the tree house that he and Danny Rehrer built. It was probably because I was the only girl that could climb the tree!
I got to know Mark at age eleven through scouting. We had a camping trip to French Creek the week after John Kennedy was killed if I recall. Mark and I (Mark & Mark) were assigned to share a pup tent. We checked in Friday night, pitched the tent, and it began to rain, and rain, all weekend. As we lay in our sleeping bags Friday night, I remembered hearing, "don't touch the tent walls during rain". I told Mark the same. Mark was never one to take things at face value, that was Mark, so he ran his fingers all over the old canvas, within an hour water was seeping through, flooding his side of the tent only, we laughed.
Mark and I had quite a past I would always call him Mugsie and he called me Onie. This came as quite a shock I know we lived on the wrong side most of the time but Mugsie was always the one to be to keep us in the here and now. the best times I remember were when we would be out digging fence post holes and at the end of the day we went back to the trailer by the river and just colapsed. He was a good friend and I will miss him.
Well this did not come as a shock to me. I was Mark's best friend growing up. We went to church together and became friends in first grade. It was funny seeing Cheryls comment. She was one of the first girls I remember getting interested in as a pre-teen (I forgot the tree house story-thanks for the memory Cheryl). Mark was the first one to introduce me to Pot at 14. We were pretty close and did a lot of drugs together in the late 60's and early 70's. I drifted away from Mark as he got into herion and saw him on occation until his death. It was just a matter of time as I saw quite a few of my Marshall Street buddies go down that same street. Rest in peace my friend.
