Earl "E.Y." Gilkey September 16, 2011 Earl "E.Y." Gilkey, 59, of Cicero, passed away early Friday morning, September 16, 2011, surrounded by his loving family and friends, after a courageous seven-year battle with prostate cancer. A native of Syracuse, he was a 1970 graduate of Cicero High School and a 1975 graduate of Cortland State University. In 2007, he retired from Lakeshore Road Elementary School after a wonderful 32- year career in the North Syracuse Central School District. He will be missed dearly by his colleagues and students as well. He was a multiple inductee of Who's Who of American Teachers, a member of the NSEA and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church of Cicero. E.Y. and Jan had a summer home in Cape Vincent, NY, where they enjoyed playing golf and fishing the mighty St. Lawrence River. E.Y. was an avid bowler at Express Lanes and achieved two perfect 300 games. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, ice fishing with his wife, Jan, pheasant hunting and riding his Harley motorcycle. His family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, assistants and palliative care specialists of four south at Crouse Hospital and the doctors, nurses and staff at Brittonfield who took such great care of him. Surviving are his wife of 26 years, the former Janette "Jan" G. Wass; his parents, Robert H. and Louise E. Edwards Gilkey; a brother, Theodore "Ted" (Mary Ann) Gilkey; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Services will be 9:30 a.m. Monday, September 19, 2011, at Fergerson Funeral Home and 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church of Cicero, with burial following in North Syracuse Cemetery. Calling hours will be 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 215 South Main Street, North Syracuse. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Hospice of CNY, 990 Seventh North Street, Liverpool, NY 13088. Fergerson Funeral Home, Inc.
