When we were at Tech, there was an amateur (ham) radio shack in the Electronics/Radio Shop. Several of our classmates were ham radio operators. But, after we left Tech, electronic technology was rapidly changing and I did not have the time to keep up with it as I was busy with college and later, a career as an educator.

In 2011, there was a meeting to establish what became the Elk Grove-Florin Amateur Radio Club and a friend suggested that I might be interested. I attended the meeting and offered to be on the By Laws Committee.

For a few years, I was often the only person at meetings who did not have a license. As a result I was needled and nudged to get my ham radio license, and in 2014, took and passed the Technician Class License exam and was issue call sign KK6MVJ. In April of 2019, I took and passed the General Class License exam.

I am now able to get on the air and enjoy talking with other hams around the globe.

I served as president of the Elk Grove-Florin Amateur Radio Club from 2019 until May 2024, when a new president was elected.

Moral of this story: If you had a special interest 'way back when' and can achieve earning the license to obtain that ambition, 'go for it’.

In June, I celebrated my 80th birthday in the Philippines surrounded by 50 family and friends for a spectacular day… Maribel celebrated her 78th birthday the same day as her actual birthday is June 20 and mine, June 21.

When visiting the Philippines I have been Temporary Operating Permit to operate as DV1/KK6MVJ. As a result I have a growing number of ham radio friends in the country.
