It's a strange world that we live in.  I just talked to my little sister in IL and her son is out shoveling the  snow off the driveway and sidewalk .  I am going out in a while to water my lawn,  plants, especially my baby orange tree.  I will pray that it actually produces some oranges this , it's third year.  In CA we are restricted to two days a week to water, mine is Tuesday and Saturday.  We can only water until 10:00 AM  AND AFTER 7:00 PM. So I either have to get my act together in the morning or mess up my evening.  Retirement is tough, with so many decisions to make, but I will endure this hardship too.  Boo Hoo!  Just kidding.

JOy,

I am in Northern California and we have been doing such a good job of saving water that they are raising the price. The water company isn't mamking enough money. Murphy's Law!

I'll tell you a secret, We love it here in California, we just sound unhappy so that no one will want to move here and ( like my darling little grand daughter Emily says) invade our own personal space.  Everyone is welcome to visit, but don't take over our space.  So if you hear or read about us grumbleing about CA, just know it's for our own protection.  JOY

Joy,

I agree with you I love living in California.  Too manypeople are ready to criticize let's just love where we are and respect those who live in other places.

Hi Martie, we are practically neighbors.  I am now in Sacramento.  I am proud of you for being careful with the water.  We all need to conserve.  Dan, don't worry, you didn't hurt my feelings, I delight in reading everyone's input.  Maybe I don't take life serious enough, I know there are many beautiful places all over this country, and in my travels, I have seen everything from east to west & north to south.  In fact it was just about three years ago that I went to my 50th state.  I will say this, North Dakota  one of my least favorite states.  It's near the bottom of the list of wonders we are blessed to have here in USA.  Even though ND has some interesting places to experience too.   I am so excited to be planning two trips this year and maybe a third.  My motto is 'PAY YOUR BILLS, SAVE ENOUGH TO BE BURIED,  AND HAVE FUN WITH THE REST. (That is if there is anything left)  I will be going to Ogden in June and on a cruise for mine and my sisters birthday this year.  Who knows by next year we all may be heading to the happy hunting ground or as we LDS say the other side of the veil.  JOY

Just one more thing, I love San Deigo and that's one of the places I am going.  OK!  One more, anyone who is ever in Sacramento, "come on down (or up).  I would love to see you again.  Last thing (I promise) I will always have a special place in my heart for Ogden.  I have a lot of family and history there.  JOY

Hi Joy & Martie,

Maybe I could join you both for lunch.  I live in El Dorado Hills, just east of Sacramento. Not trying to butt in; however, we could discuss pre-planning the next reunion, or how to get Dan back to the world. Huggs!

Martie and Val,   it will be wonderful to meet for lunch, however I wonder if there would be a more central location for Martie.    My sister in San Jose and I meet in Tracy, sometimes.  I am good to go where ever.  Lets come up with a date and time.  JOY

Val & Martie, there is a great place in El Dorado Hills that I have been to several times but I don't remember the name.  It is in a big shopping center and if I remember right they serve Mexican food along with other choices.  That would be so far for martie though.  Maybe Tracy or Pleasanton would be morecentral.  Let's work it out. JOY

Do any of you remember Roland Tuskamoto (spelling?) I well remember him and his screaming 1956 Chevy two door hard-top! One night, just like in the movie "American Grafetti" - I'm not sure of the exact date or even where the race was held but I think on the outskirts of the Salt Lake airport - Roland ('Moto') raced a guy in a hot car from California and sad to say, Roland lost. However not to be undone, during the next week or so Roland and his father took the heads off of the 56 Chevy, had them milled, then bored out the cylinders and put in oversized pistons. When they had the '56' all put back together "Moto" again challenged the guy from California and this time he beat him! Do any of you remember anything about that night? Does anyone remember what the guy from the coast was driving? My memory says it was a 57 Chevy but?? --- 1962 was among the very best of times; a magic time when girls looked like girls and even wore dresses to school - beautiful! - We listened to great music, drove great cars and had great times (some sad times too) but most of my memories were of having good times; nobody got hurt... well maybe occasionally. --- I also remember listening to Buddy Holly and other early rock singers while working on my cars in Don Campbell's auto mechanics class. In two months time I tore the engine of a 1949 chevy apart, rebuilt it (rings, berings, seated the valves etc.) and it ran like a watch! But a sad time for me was one day when Marilyn Loveless came walking into the auto shop and called off our barely budding relationship. She was so cute. It broke my heart. I felt like crying. Then I started dating Iris Ellis. Also a wonderful girl.We had good times together. If anyone has seen Iris please give her my very best. Her older sister June was just as neat... Another wonderful memory for me were the Assemblies at Ben Lomond, we had some fine talent in our class of '62'.

I have enjoyed all of the inspiring messages while watching conference today and am lookin forward to watching it again tomorrow.

Donna Harbertson (Persinger)

Well Easter and Conference are over and it was inspiring and enjoyed having as many of my family who were in town over for dinner.  Today is supposed to be a nice slow soaking rain which we desperately need, but so far only saw a few sprinkles on our windshield as we drove home from Ogden.  Another weather disappointment.  I also got a notice from Weber Conservation Learning Garden about watering.  l:  No Watering between 10 am and 6 pm   2:  No excessive water use.  3:  Repair any leaks in watering system.  4:  No water runoff from property.  Reasonable so far, but from what has been said on TV, I think they will be coming up with more rules. I also read about the new water restrictions on CA.  A lot of pressure to remove grass and change landscaping, and also a mandated 25% reduction in water use for property owners.  Some stating that last year they were paying approx. $600 per month for water.  I hope we aren't following in CA's footsteps as far a drought goes, but am not sure how long this will last.  This is the warmest I have ever seen it here, and the lowest water for use starting in spring and summer usage.  The runoff is almost over, very little snow patches to be seen.  It says we have enough for this year, but not sure about next year.  I wouldn't mind removing grass in front yard, but it would be a lot of work and money to change landscaping and I don't want zeroscaping.  I love lawn in my back yard.  I guess time and mother nature  will be dictating our yard futures.  We lived in Barstow, CA from 1974 to 1978 so I know what living in a desert is like.  I did learn to love Barstow, but mostly because of the people we knew and loved.  I have to admit that even the desert has its beauty, every place we have lived has had its beauty and good people, but I really don't like the heat and would not like to return to it.  We have our solar panels installed now and so far are making more power than we are using.  We haven't had an actual bill since it has been installed, and know we will be paying at least $9-10 a month which is a fee for having a connection with Utah Power.  I hope all this expense is worth it, we will be finding out when the air conditioning starts running how much of a savings we will be having.  If this weather keeps up it will be sooner rather than later.  My husband is active in the Masons and Scottish Rite and has a state office this year.  It is sure taking a lot of his time in meetings, but there is a perk, he is getting fed at most of the meetings, and I do not have to cook all this week, and three times next week, etc., etc...  Good thing I have left overs from Easter dinner.  I cook most our meals, but it is not bad to not have to cook.  It will end when this year is over.  We are going on a church history vacation two weeks in July, and the Mason's don't meet the month of August.  So mostly cooking in August, and only part of July.  Life is good.  I hope you Californians can get together for lunch and have some enjoyable talking about now and then.  My husband's school has a reunion yearly, but not as big as the 50 they had last year.  I am glad we will be meeting again in 3 years.  When I read the obits, it  gets scary sometimes, many more deaths starting in the 40's.  But we can't worry about the end of our lives, but live the fullest in the now of our lives.  Hope everyone has a great April, with lots of rain and good health, good family, and good fun.  Talk later.......Donna

As a pharmaceutical representative In Galveston Texas I saw first hand the wonderful work done at the Shriners Burns Institute, a hospital specializing in treating sever burns of victims from all over the world. Many of these unfortunate souls were impoverished children who had no hope for relief otherwise. Kudos to Masons everywhere Danny and Donna! --- My thoughts today also center around last week's Conference broadcast. What a wonderful way to celebrate Easter! --- These are difficult times, and I also wanted to share an idea that has helped me a great deal these days. When you download LDS Scriptures from the internet, you also get a bonus of all the past issues of the Ensign magazine dating back to 1972. Within the pages under the heading "Mormon Journal" and later "Latter Day Saint Voices" you'll find short stories that truly ignite the soul! Many mornings I'll read one or two and often also share them with Susan. They are a grand uplift! --- Growing up in Utah I had many fine examples of church members like Don C. Campbell BLHS auto mechanics teacher, also Merle Fowlers a Scout Master who helped me achieve the Eagle award. Many of you were also fine examples... all I can say is thanks so much to those of you who were friends.

It was so good to read your messages today.  Donna, we do have all of the same restrictions with watering that you do and the 25% reduction also.  I have always been thrifty with water by only doing full loads of laundry and dishes, moreover, I don't believe it's necessary to take 20 minute showers.  When I was on the staff for girls camp for seven years, the showers were restricted to 3 minutes.  I might take an extra minute at times, but we must do what ever it takes. On Tuesday we were so blessed with a big rain storm for the first time in months.  There may be more rain in a couple of days.  As for myself, I have a covered  wooden deck in the back, which leads to a brick patio that takes up most of my yard and about an 8 foot strip across the back with plants that do well in a dry climate.  The only thing that I really have to be concerned with is my orange tree.  It is about 4 feet tall and growing.  It was tiny when it was given to me for a house warming gift 3 years ago.  In front, the lawn is small.  It connects with my neighbor's lawn.  I suggested last year that we tear it out and put in rocks.  She had a fit and said that she would take care of it, if I will water it and leave it the way it is.  Surprise to her, I am not going to waste precious water on lawn.  Besides some of the rocks look very nice.

My sister is coming out from IL next month for a family wedding, then we are going to make a road trip to Ogden.  We still have a lot of family there.  Have a beautiful day everyone.  JOY

Dan:

I Knew if the movie affected you as it affected me you would need to reflect on it for a time before posted a response.

And your response was a good one!

I will now have to reflect for a while before I post a follow-up.

Dan:  Speaking of living long enough to get to something, I have spent the last month reading "War and Peace"-  over 1200 pages.  It took Tolstoy over five years to write it and it says a lot about the topics you all have been discussing.  I have ordered "The Fog of War" from netflix.  I am constantly trying to understand how we as humans seem to keep repeating the same insane activities.  I try to find instances of where we have progressed over time and I do find some.  Here in my neck of the woods - VT,NH - we have a great continuing education program where we can take a wonderous range of classes.  Right now, I'm taking "the dark side of the Reformation".  Next on my reading list is the Qu'ran - not that you can just read through scriptures.  I will send you my email address and want to keep in the discussion.  You have so much experience which I have not had (and vice versa).  Janet

Dan, Val, Tod, and all of you who have served in the Military especially during the horrific wars and conflicts.  I have to apologize for the fact that while you were out risking life and limb, I was completely in LALA land.  I was busy being a stay at home mother, taking girls to dancing lessons, Primary and changing diapers, in my almost perfect little world. My Dad served in the Army-Air Core during WW 2 and  I have two Brothers-in law who served and retired, one from the Air Force, and was deployed to several places including Japan, and the most terrifying, Vietnam.  The other one retired from the Navy. he was at sea during the Vietnam  Conflict (war).  Neither one ever talked about their service.  Now that my only Son is serving in the Army and has been deployed several times leaving his precious family to fend for themselves for 9 months once and a few times for a whole year.   I have learned so much about what was happening while I was home cooking meals taking care of all the domestic issues around the house.  I am amazed and proud for all you have done to make life a better place to live.

It breaks my heart to know about the tragic way all to the Vietnam Vets were treated.  I am just relived and happy that it is better.  It's still not there yet but I have faith that all of you who have served and the ones who serve now and in the future will see even more improvement.

I have been privileged to plan and implement special Memorial day, and Veterans Day programs honoring those who died for our freedom and those who served our country even taking flags out to put on the graves of those who died in service.  I planed these programs every year while I was the Activity Director at  the residential facilities I worked at.  My son was in the jr, ROTC in High School and his commanding officer offered to have the whole unit come and put on programs.  When I moved to Elk Grove, the VFW colorgaurd and members came to honor the residents who served and their spouses.  You ALL deserve the best.  Thank you JOY W.

Well, kids, My sister that lives in IL will be here in just about one week.  We will do some of the California stuff, go to a family wedding then the first of the month the three of us sisters will make a road trip to the ever famous Ogden.  I want to go to all the old places and the new ones too, take pictures, visit family and generally have a good time.  Some of the must do's are to of course go to the houses where we grew up, stop at BLHS, Rainbow Gardens,go explore 25th street and see for ourselves if it is now as quaint and interesting as I have been told.  We will go up to Logan to visit a neice there, stopping for lunch at Maddox where we used to go when I was a kid.  Did I miss anything spectacular???  JOY
