Donald Hyland - Class Of 1958 VIEW PROFILE

Donald Byron Hyland, 76, Smithville, Mo., passed away due to cancer. He died peacefully at his home Monday, July 18, 2016. A memorial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 21, at Terrace Park Funeral Home in Kansas City, Mo., with a gathering beginning at 10 a.m. Don was born May 29, 1940, in Omaha, Neb. The son of Harry and Bettye Hyland. He graduated from Technical High School in 1958. He served in the Navy for six years and was an Electronics Technician (ET2) aboard the U.S.S. Dixie (AD-14). He attended the University of Iowa and went on to become a certified biomedical engineer. He worked at North Kansas City Hospital where he established the biomedical engineering department. He also worked for Health Midwest and HCA before retiring in 2003. He is survived by his spouse, Verda of 37 years; children, Terri S. (Hyland) Harvey, Traci J. Hyland, Bryan Kirkland and Cynthia (Kirkland) Patane; brothers, Louis Hyland, Daryle Hyland, Michael Hyland and sister, Kathy (Hyland) Smith. He had six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by his beloved hunting partner of 17 years, Victoria. Don was an avid fisherman and hunter who loved the outdoors. He also enjoyed traveling. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Disabled American Veterans or a charity of your choosing. A private inurnment will take place at a later date.
