Hello Class of 70.
1970 has just had a wonderful reunion weekend. I believe everyone attending will attest to that fact and I believe everyone will confirm that the events were superbly planned and conducted. Credit given were credit due for excellent events.
Both reunions in fact. On the same night. Just 3 miles apart. I completely enjoyed the first, the only one that I was notified of. On the Saturday of the event, I learned of the other. And that night at the first reunion, I was asked by some dear friends to go with them. The 3 miles. Only 3 miles. It was a purely golden opportunity.
Everyone was having a great time at both places. But it wasn't everyone together, was it?
Wonderful friends were having fun, laughing, dancing, and telling stories about days together in school. But it wasn't with all of their friends, was it?
Only 3 miles apart.
The 60s are known for people who marched, and sometimes gave their lives to put an end to the Jim Crowe laws. “Equal but separate”.
Once you get past “drugs, sex and rock n roll”, The 70s were known for taking a moral stance, speaking out against social injustice.
Have we come full circle in 40 years? No. We have just gone backwards, because we were more united in 1970 than we appear to be now. I use the word appear because I don’t think this is what the Class of 1970 wants. The Class of 1970 is "everyone" and it must be asked, what do the PEOPLE want?
That night was a great night, but there have been a lot of sleepless nights since. There were many hopes expressed that night but it has been mostly quiet since then. Silence will ensure that this travesty continues.
The Class of 69 struggled with this as well and overcame it. They have been asked to add their voices within the communities in hopes that it will encourage 1970 grads to overcome this. 1970 can not wait 10 years to address this. We can not wait 5 years. The class of 70 must begin now.
The next several weeks may provide some future opportunities where "everyone" could come together, but opportunities can be missed if we don't reach out. Voices reach out.
