Re: Texas Pelican & Revolving Stage Posted Sunday, September 27, 2009 05:28 PM I remember there were some great bands but the night I remember was when I turned around on the dance floor and right in front of me was Janis Joplin. I think she was attending her high school reunion. It looked like she was in the party mood... |

RE: Texas Pelican & Revolving Stage Posted Monday, September 28, 2009 08:38 AM Janis Joplin? wow. I remember the Circle Club better than the Pelican at least while we were in high school. What I remember best is that upstairs was rhythm and blues (Boogie Kings sort of music) and downstairs the music was in French and you could watch the older couples dance around the room. Very south Louisiana. And, of course, I was NOT supposed to be across the river at all. I was always too scared to have more than 1 or 2 drinks and those were early in the evening because my Mom waited up for me to make sure I wasn't past my ridiculously early curfew. I loved to dance and always had fun over there. |

RE: Texas Pelican & Revolving Stage Posted Monday, September 28, 2009 10:48 AM Helen, I may have been there that same night. I remember Janis was all decked out in her beads, hat, etc. I remember the band played one of her songs and she began dancing. About 40 guys kinda surrounded her and danced with her. The revolving stage was way kewl. I have a great memory of Mr Kleen finishing up his set.. He was still singing as the stage began to rotate. At some point, they singing was drowned out by the horn section of the Buggie Kings. Jerry |

RE: Texas Pelican & Revolving Stage Posted Monday, September 28, 2009 12:48 PM I also remember the night Joe Tex was there and I ended up dancing on a table. Yes, I do remember Mr. Clean. We do have a lot of memories over there. I somehow think my parents knew I was over there dancing. If you were tall enough to put the money on the bar...you would be served. Can't remember what my drink of choice was...I also remember a fight close to the pool tables. Two guys were swinging their pool sticks at each other and the bouncers broke them up. I was at the Circle Club a few times. I did not like the downstairs music but did like it upstairs. I guess it was too small. I went in to Lou Ann's once...that was enough for me. My #3 brother-in-law saw me in there and gave me a lot of grief. I witnessed a fight that was broken up with tear gas. They turned on the fans and it went in everyones eyes...ouch. The memories... |

RE: Texas Pelican & Revolving Stage Posted Monday, September 28, 2009 01:37 PM I don't remember have any high school memories of going across the river. My parents were pretty strict about it. The one time I remember going it was to join David's older brothers and their wives. My mother "allowed" me to go even though I was only 16. David was 18 and legal but he was the one who had to show ID; they didn't ask me. lol We went to the Circle Club a lot once I turned 18. |

RE: Texas Pelican & Revolving Stage Posted Monday, September 28, 2009 03:26 PM I am probably one of the few who did not go across the river. My parents would have killed me, and I was afraid if Jack found out, he would take away the few privileges I did have, and if Natalie found out, yikes, that little Cajun would have whipped me back across the river! Of course, they went over to the Circle club to dance! |

RE: Texas Pelican & Revolving Stage Posted Saturday, October 10, 2009 12:57 PM I remember the lighted floor upstairs at the Circle. The stomp was in and the big cluncky thick heeled shoes. Each time we stomped on the floor it shook the place. I loved that part of it. |

RE: Texas Pelican & Revolving Stage Posted Saturday, October 10, 2009 01:40 PM I remember one outing, it must have been in our college days. We had a group of 8 or 10 go to the Circle. I think it was after HS because Chris Musmeche with there with his future wife, Cindy and I had brought Zola across the river for the first time. Remember how the ceiling sloped near the outside wall? Well I think we might have been drinking a little. We were coming off the dance floor and Chris forgot to duck. He hit his forehead on one of the rafters. He couldn't get the slow weep of blood to stop. Cindy was in nursing school. She got Chris to tear off a length of the table cloth. She wrapped around his head and tied it to look like a hippie head band. In a very short order we all were wearin white head bands. I am sure the manager was not happy when they began clean up that night. |
