Meckes, Joseph R.Joseph R. Meckes, 63, of Orefield, died Friday, August 15, 2014 at the Inpatient Hospice Unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown. He was the husband of Sharon M. (Hoffman) Meckes to whom he was married 40 years last August 18. Born in Allentown, May 21, 1951, Joe was the son of the late Russell C. Sr. and Nadine E. (Moyer) Meckes. He was employed in the IT Department of Air Products and Chemical, Inc. in Trexlertown for over 30 years before retiring in 2004. He also worked part-time at Crystal Spring Farm in Schnecksville for the last 9 years. Active in the life of his church and community, Joe was a member of the Lutheran congregation of Ziegels Union Church, Breinigsville, currently serving as the Lutheran Council President and was Chairman of the Worship and Music Committee. He also sang with the choir and played hand bells. Joe was a former Boy Scout Leader of Troop # 261, Breinigsville, a former Neffs Volunteer Firefighter and former Northwestern Youth Soccer Coach. Survivors: In addition to his wife, Sharon; son, Gregory J. Meckes of Glen Burnie, MD; daughter, Valerie S. Missmer and her husband, Jason of Orefield; sister, Joanne M. Duke and her husband, Earl of Orefield; brother, Russell C. Meckes, Jr. and his wife, Deborah of Trexlertown; two grandchildren, Benjamin and Ava; grand puppies. Services: Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Ziegels Union Church, 9990 Ziegels Church Road, Breinigsville, with the Rev. Candi L. Cain-Borgman officiating. Family and friends may pay their respects from 7 - 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Heintzelman Funeral Home, Inc., 4906 Route 309, Schnecksville and 10 - 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Interment will follow the service in the adjacent parish cemetery. Online expressions of sympathy may be recorded at www.heintzelmancares.com.
