School Story:

I started behind the curve as a result of grade school and then high school 1962-1966. I finally did finish well in high school but was still catching up in Yuba Junior College 1966-1968. I went to one year at Prairie Bible College 1968-1969. I went to Sacramento Bible Institute 1973-1976 Cum Laude. At Talbot Theological Seminary a graduate school of Biola University 1978-1979, I got my Evangelical Teacher Training Association Christian Education Diploma and Master of Arts in Christian Education. Magna Cum Laude, In who’s who, and elected to membership in KAPPA TAU EPSILON, the Talbot Theological Seminary scholastic honor society. I was a student member of “Christian Camping International 1984-1985. Other courses were taken at American River College in Sacramento from 1982-1984.

What's your story since high school?

Continued my Education Yuba College 66-68
Prairie Bible College 68-69
Vietnam war 1969-1970
Separated from the Army
Worked as Civil Draftsman for Killeen City Hall TX
Pastered Rackerby Community Church
Worked at Fain's Appliance as repairman
Graduation from Sacramento Bible Institute 1976
Machinist at Yuba Feather Precision Manufacturing
Got my MA in Education at Biola University
Did substitute teaching
Managed Pilot Lake Conference Center La Port Ca
was an Industrial Engineer Tech /production planer
Maintenance computer systems manager at McClellan AFB. Management Analyst/Engineer at LA AFB
I am a Program Manager and Knowledge Management Librarian for the Space and Missile Center at LA AFB
I started building my work ethic at home with various chores. It progressed to doing chores for others. My first official job was on a chicken ranch mixing feed, feeding chickens, collecting eggs, sorting chickens and inoculating them. At Prairie Bible Institute I worked audio-visual making visuals, the art department making magazine illustrations, and lead for school lighting team. I was heavy weapons specialist in the army with recoilless rifles, 60mm, 81mm, 4.2inch mortars and rocket launchers.
By the way you remember I avoided being drafted a marine. I worked supporting the marines as they drove tractors to make roads, take out bunkers, etc. We played army against marine volleyball. The marines played very aggressively as they thought they were better than the army. I would block their slams and slammed some myself. In frustration they said, “Something’s wrong here; you should have been a marine” to which I said, “you don’t know the half of it I almost was”.
I got out of the army at Fort Hood, Texas. I worked with the Navigators doing discipleship and Killeen City Hall as City Draftsman doing civil drafting of maps, sub-divisions, roads, utilities, etc.
Growing tired of Texas I returned to California to find that the Rackerby Community Church no longer had a pastor. They said that as far as they were concerned I was still their Sunday School Superintendent. They wanted me fill the pulpit so I did for a year or so.
I got on as an appliance repairman in Oroville as an apprentice under a disadvantaged program. They decided that I was not disadvantaged and they terminated me after about a half a year.
I returned to school and then went to work as pattern burner with a torch. Moved on to be a production press and shear operator and then production machinist all for Feather River Precision Manufacturing. I completed the contract and was out of work again so I went back to school. After school I completed another contract there. I then got married. I managed a high mountain camp facility and program for a year. I worked as substitute teacher for a number of private and Christian schools in the Sacramento area. I went to school again postmasters by now having become a professional student.
I finally got on full-time for McClellan Air Logistics Center of the Air Force Material Command. I was in an industrial engineering technician program. It started as facility manager, to work measurement, to production planner and then I moved computer systems modernization, and legacy systems analyst. When they closed McClellan with BRAC I took a job at the Space and Missile Center of Los Angeles Air Force Base El Segundo, CA. I started as system manager for financial management (FM). I worked a special project of management reengineering for FM and now I am a program manager working process centric transformation and process flows for a knowledge management system. I have now worked for the Federal Government for 24 years and plan to retire with 30 years or so.

Do you travel much?

Yes I believe Vietnam was the farthest.
In advanced infantry training, I was trained in mortars. When I went to Fort Louis to fly to Vietnam they lost my records but decided to board me anyway. When I arrived they were under attack so we had to take cover. As things settled they said “where did you come from nothing says you should be here”. So I said “good send me back then”! After they processed everyone else, they made temporary records. I had them send a copy of my orders so that they could not send my brother David to Vietnam, nor put him in harm’s way.
Vietnam exposed me to the many wonders of its culture and geography. That, as well as the daily challenges of war, caused me to take one day at a time, learning to make the most out of what I had. I was assigned to Echo Company in the 2nd of the 1st battalion of the 196 Infantry Brigade of the Americal Division. They counted me as a Heavy Weapons specialist and put me in recoilless rifles though I was not trained in its use. The next day I was sent on a mission with it. For a while I flew in and out on missions as required. This all changed when we became the swing battalion. That meant we were considered the best in the brigade. We were used to do all special actions to establish or bail out an overrun base or landing zone, deal with any enemy strongholds, search and destroy, etc.
Because I was not formally trained with the recoilless rifles I used them in non-conventional ways that built my reputation as the best recoilless rifle gunner in Vietnam. I earned the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Metal with “V” Devise & two oak leaf clusters, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze stars, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Republic of Vietnam (RVN) Gallantry Cross Medal w/Palm, Certificate of Appreciation from Richard Nixon Commander in Chief, Department of the Army Certificate of Appreciation from W.C. Westmoreland General United States Army, Chief of Staff, Army Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation w/Palm Ribbon, Army Valorous Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation, and Army Meritorious Unit Citation.
Enough of this- let's go on to some of the stories behind this stuff. Because I rationalized that if God did not keep me out of Vietnam, He must be my shield and bunker. When I started my teammate was a career soldier whose prior service was in Germany. He wanted medals and glory. We got so that we would dare one another to do things to see who was the better man (or fool). He told me he was going to keep this up until he got shot. Then he would sham until they sent him home. Well he did just that, which I will tell about later.
When my partner and I were on a search and destroy mission, the company had set up camp and was sending out patrols to round up prisoners from around the area. We decided to round up some for ourselves. Other than the recoilless, we only had one 45 cal. pistol between the two of us. On the way out we ran into a RVN patrol returning. We invited them to come along but they refused saying the Vietcong were up there. We said no problem we would kill them. We found that they had a wolverine tied with its legs behind its back. We decided that if the enemy wanted it tied we would untie it. We went on and rounded up prisoners and took them back to camp to be processed. We then returned to take a bath in a well that we found as a result. When we packed up to return to base another patrol found a group of Vietcong across the field from the well.
On another mission we were to locate a heavy weapons buildup and do as much damage as possible. We had three 90mm recoilless Teams -- one at the front of the company one in the middle, and me at the end to protect the rear. Every time they ran into something the radio would say the other two teams were unable to handle the situation so get up here and deal with it. The company was strung out for about a mile so and I was getting tired of this routine.
The last time they said we were being fired on with 57mm recoilless. The forward observer called artillery on our own position when I got there so I dropped the recoilless and took cover in a large bomb crater. Shrapnel was falling out of the sky all around me. I said to my partner it's ok as long as it doesn’t blow in our hole with us. After this we were to move out across a large rice field.
We decided to disobey orders and move out in the middle of the company. If anything happened we could run to either end with only half the problem. While the third platoon officer was still chewing us out saying, “I told you to guard my rear”; the whole middle of the company was blowing up like the 4th of July. The command was given to get everyone across. We looked out there and said no way is anything going to make it across there. We decided to get behind a big boulder that was near us. The enemy saw my weapon and tried to shoot

What countries have you been to?

Canada, Okinawa, Japan, Vietnam, and I believe I stopped to change fights in the Philippines and I was on the border of Laos if not in it.

Have you done anything that would surprise us? Body piercings? Tatoos? Unusual trips, jobs, etc.

On the Myers Biggs personality type indicator I test out as an introverted intuitive Thinker Perceptive (INTP). As INTP my mind is excellent at problem solving and designing systems. My mind's logical functions weed out irrelevant information and cut right to the heart of a problem. I have an innate dislike of redundancy and imprecision. I am happiest when I am involved in discovering the intricacies and elegance of a complex system. I seek out natural laws and underlying principles from which I can build inventive theoretical models. When involved in these analytical and intuitive activities, I can produce ideas of startling creative brilliance. I interact with the environment intuitively, observing the big picture and its implications. I process this information logically and abstractly, analyzing new ideas until every aspect is understood. Starting with only a vague intuition, I can construct a whole new world of ideas.
The ideal jobs for me are ones that require the complex analysis of ideas rather than a focus on details; involve interaction with few people rather than many; provide the opportunity to work on a series of new and interesting problems rather than to see one project through from beginning to end; and allow me to use my minds creativity without worrying about the practical application of the ideas I develop. I also work best if I am not over-burdened with rules and regulations and I am free to express the more creative aspects of my thinking. I have an intense need for competence in whatever job I am doing, but I may not feel the need to demonstrate this competence to others.

As a Rational thinker I am fiercely independent and do not spend a lot of time in the emotional touchy feely mode. I suppose you may have even noticed that in what I have written thus far. The fact is I have the ability to completely seal myself off from my emotion. This served me well in Vietnam. It allowed me to continue to function where others became disabled psychologically. These people were completely debilitated their whole lives. It likely appeared the war did not affect me in fact I came out stronger with more drive and perspective. I could tell all the gruesome details of the reality of the war as though all the carnage was mere butchered meat. It took me a long time before I ever saw them as not only real people, but also friends and people I cared for. It took me a long time, but I found that emotion was not dead just severely suppressed.

God has definitely left His mark on me. How much of a mark did I leave on the World where it touched me you can decide for yourself. Is this world any different for having encountered me? Are there stories interwoven into my story, where I caused a change, hopefully for the better, in other’s storylines? I don’t know many of these stories maybe you can find some if you talk to others I have had contact with. It is after all a “Never Ending Story”. The fact still holds true that “No man is an island to himself”. The past including our ancestors and the stories of their lives weave into our lives to impact our present. As we make choices, in response to the events that touch us, we form our very character. These decisions not only affect our storyline, and us but countless others and their storylines. My hope is that beyond my faults and poor choices, I am still able to pass-on a legacy of good decisions. This should serve as a sound foundation for me, and the generations after me. It would also be nice if they and I could avoid some of the pitfalls that result from bad choices. I have raised my children to be independent, but I have had to live with their poor choices. They tend to make all their choices the reverse from what I would choose. It is hard to let them do that so I try to provide better and more complete information while challenging them to think it through and to look at more than one side of an issue. I did and do make some decisions for them, but they are grown now and must learn from their own mistakes. How they handle this is how they build their own character with their own storyline.

I have a connective tissue disorder similar to Marfan syndrome. My Dad and all my siblings have this genetic condition. It mainly presents at the base of the aorta where the tissue stretches until the valve does not close. The aorta can explode or tear or the valve can fail or prolapses. In my case I also have an anyeurism of the lower aorta, stretch marks, and hernias. I had appendiceal cancer. I also have hypothyroid disease, Fibramyalgia, Sleep Apnea, Diabetes, and moderately high cholesterol.

Back to Vietnam where I left off. Those that were severely traumatized thought they were just going walk and/or swim home. The more rational lined up to reenlist for a different assignment. I tried to talk the machine gunner out of it, which I did for awhile. I used the same argument I used on my brother “just do your time and go home rather than let them continue t

I filter everything in my life through the Word of God the Bible the Creator’s handbook

What were your favorite songs in high school?

I Don't remember but I will share this instead.
Many people have told me that wish they knew what made me tick? What is the guiding force? Why do you think and act the way you do? This is the best I can do with my analytical mind. I center my life on correct tried and true principles to create a solid foundation, because proven principles do not change. Principles and natural laws are based in God and His creation. I find principles from the Bible the most reliable where the Bible has something to say. My guidance, wisdom, and power are primarily based on these principles, The Holy Spirit, my own logic, analysis, and creativity.
Because I believe the Bible to be the inerrant Word of God I find that my chief function in life is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. I believe in the total depravity of man and as a result of sin all creation is imperfect and under condemnation. However, I believe God in His grace sent His only son born of a virgin to die in my place so I might be born again into the family of God by His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit works in me both to will and to do of God's good pleasure transforming me into the likeness of Jesus Christ. Because I believe that all of creation is running down and decaying ultimately to be destroyed I find all of it to be temporary.
True lasting value must be in what is eternal that is God and Man's soul. Because this is true I am increasingly compelled to be with others who form the body of believers that are looking forward to the return of Christ and the creation of a new heaven and earth after God has completed His judgment of this one.
Therefore as for family, my possessions, and me we will serve the Lord, seeking first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. God has gifted me with my particular set of gifts, talents, skills, and personality traits that make-up my individuality to uniquely serve Him and mankind. Therefore, whatever I find to do, I will do it with all my might seeking to do the best I am capable of doing, as a good steward of all God gives me. God has given me a body, spirit, and soul. The soul has intellect, will, and emotion; the later I tend to ignore so I need to make a conscience effort to take care of it. God has also given me a spouse, family, friends, enemies, work, money, pleasure, community, governmental responsibility, and possessions. The above order is pretty much the order I would place for priority. The possessions that I acquire are mine to use so long as it pleases God. God is free to do as He wishes with them and me. Thus I find that I am driven to increase my own personal competence seeking wisdom, and understanding more than possessions that are transient and temporary.
Though I enjoy and find comfort in possessions I find true power and satisfaction in competence, wisdom, and knowledge that are based in principle and enhance both the temporal and the eternal. I am a conceptual problem solver, intensely intellectual and logical, with flashes of creative brilliance. I am outwardly quiet reserved, and detached, inwardly absorbed in analyzing problems. I am critical, precise, and skeptical. I try to find and use principles to understand my many ideas. I like conversations to be logical and purposeful and may argue to the point of hairsplitting just for fun. Only logical reasoning convinces me. I prize intelligence in myself, and have a strong drive for personal competence, and am interested in challenging other people to become more competent as well. I am primarily interested in seeing the possibilities beyond what is currently known, accepted, or obvious. I like to develop models for improving the way things are or solving difficult problems. I think in extremely complex ways and am better able to organize concepts and ideas than I am able to organize people. Occasionally, my ideas are so complex I have difficulty communicating and making others understand me. Highly independent, I enjoy speculative and imaginative activities. I am flexible and open-minded and more interested in finding creative yet sound solutions to problems than I am in seeing those solutions made into reality.
I value God, people, health, quiet time, freedom, creation, creativity, exploration, knowledge, wisdom, and intellect as primary focus. Wealth, fame, and fortune are secondary. I view everything as a resource to use for God's glory in expressions of my own creativity. I embrace change because it causes growth. I need to improve my self-image and monitor my attitude. I guard against negative self-talk and imprint positive images.
My actions are based upon self-chosen values. I choose to be proactive planning for all contingencies before circumstances or emotions can cause me to react poorly. This statement of guiding principles is to provide me with perspective and keep my vision focused on my mission. I also use it to establish my priorities so I am able to say no to the unimportant, no matter how urgent, and yes to the important,
