School Story

After graduation, I attended UC Berkeley and received a BS in Chemical Engineering and then the University of Hawaii for an MS in Ocean Engineering. I met my wife in Honolulu and we were married a couple of days after my commission in the US Navy Civil Engineer Corps. I attended UC Berkeley on GI Bill for my PhD in the growing field of environmental engineering. While teaching at Carnegie Mellon University, Stanford recruited me and we moved back to the campus. My teaching and research addresses water quality engineering and urban water supplies in the face of recurring drought and climate change.

Carol,
I didn't realize you were part of the Cubberley class of 1963. Mary and I adopted our grandsons some years ago. Jaiden Luthy attended St. Joseph for a couple of years. Jaiden is now at St. Francis. Our other grandson is at Gunn. I am still teaching water supply and quality engineering at Stanford. Best wishes, Dick Luthy, luthy@stanford.edu

Lynda, I found your story interesting. I went to Jordan and then Paly for one year, arriving at Cubberley not knowing anybody for my Jr and Sr years. My folks folks moved to the north part of Los Altos Hills that's in the Palo Alto School District. Gunn wasn't built at the time so we took the bus to Cubberely. I went to Cal (Chemical Eng) and then Hawaii (Ocean Eng.) and volunteered for the Navy Civil Engineer Corps because of the draft. I went back to Cal for my PhD on GI Bill and studied environmental engineering. One of my first research projects as a new professor was funded by the Energy Research and Development Administration, the predecessor to DOE. That was the mid to late 70s. I worked for a time on water management and water treatment for the coal gasification and liquefaction processes that were in development. In time, Stanford recruited me and we moved to the campus. Well, you never how your career will evolve and here we are living close to the place of our youth. Best wishes, Dick Luthy (luthy@stanford.edu)
