Roy B. was one of my best friends while growing up in Pampa along with LD Steele.  We hunted, fished, golfed and did just about everything together.

He was one of the lucky ones that had a car very early ( can't remember the exact year.) It was a red Mercury.  That poor car took a lot of abuse by me.  Here are several examples:

We went to a junk yard to get a new radiator cap and apparently after he put it on I did not close the hood completely.  As we were crusing down the highwayt the hood flew up and the entire front window came crashing into our laps.

Next time was when we were at the Pampa country club playing golf and LD Steele and I finished early and did not want to wait for Roy B.  He always left his keys in  the car so LD and I took his car to LD house to get LDs car.  While driving back to the golf course I floored it and the accelerator stuck.  Did I think of just turning off the engine? Nope, I put it in neutral and the the enging got so hot it caught on fire.  Well I finally did turn the key off, jumped out, opened the hood and proceeded to put the fire out with dirt (the road was not paved back then.)  After I got the fire out the car to my amazement the car started  and I drove  it to the club and parked and jumped in LD's car and the two of us went to the bowling alley.  About an  hour later Roy B. showed  up yelling "who destroyed my car."   I confessed.  My dad made be go to his house and face the music with Rob B's dad.  Cost me all of my summer earnings to get the car fixed.

Finally, one day Roy B. was taking me home from school and I reached to change the radio station and knocked the gear shift into reverse.  Damage was minor but I nevertheless paid up once again.

It's no wonder I did not get a car  until I was a freshman in college.

Roy,  I've told this story hundreds of times through the years and I bet every time you wanted to kick me in the butt.

Love  you guy!

Gary
