Michael Dee Hawkins, 65, lost his battle with cancer on Friday Nov. 29, 2013.

Michael Dee Hawkins was born in Pampa, Texas Dec. 8, 1947 to R.D. “Red” and Maxine Hawkins. Dee attended the Pampa schools, Woodrow Wilson, Pampa Junior High and Pampa High graduating in 1966. He attended West Texas State University and graduated in 1970. He was accepted into Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fla. for the U.S. Navy where he was trained as a navigator for Naval aircraft. An unusual condition kept him from going into high altitudes.

He was moved to Naval Investigations and served as a plain clothes agent in the Naval Investigation Service. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he became a marketing director for Baxter Laboratories in Chicago. He missed the Texas Panhandle and returned to Amarillo in 1978. He was founder and owner of Hawkins Trailer and Equipment Company in Amarillo for 35 years. He also owned and operated Rockhound Supply and was very active in the Golden Spread Gem & Mineral Society. He was a District Director for the Hugh O’Brian Foundation, and volunteered for non-profit organizations that worked with children

He is survived by his mother Maxine Hawkins, his beautiful wife Karen Hawkins, his brother Tom Hawkins and sister-in-law Mary. He is also survived by his son Nickolas Hartwell, and stepchildren, Shantel, A.J. and Tyson Hartwell.

Funeral services were held Monday with interment following at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
