Jim died unexpectedly at home in South Carolina, on August 30, 2009. I had just seen him in July when he stopped by my home in Maryland on his way to and from a conference in New York. It had been fun catching up on our lives since high school. After graduating from the U of I, Jim served in the Army and then worked for the VA as a substance abuse counselor for many years. Then he went back to school and got his teaching certification and spent many years as a special ed teacher. He had recently retired from the public school system and was getting ready to start a new position at a local college. He was a gentle soul with a spirited sense of humor.
