From what I remember of Denise - she was a rolli polli kind of character, i.e; sometimes she would act shut in one day and on others she would be giddy and bouncy the next. I sat behind her in seventh grade English class over at Central Junior High and I remember we had to trade off reading out loud Shirley Jackson's The Lottery together. Of course, I got to read the gory parts with the people getting their heads caved in with rocks, and I think the way I fired off or how empatheized those passages made her howl. I remember she had such a warm giggle. I'd still say hello to her whenever I passed her by in the halls at Parsippany High, but I was quite taken back that she had carried on a secret relationship with her band teacher, Mr. Nelson - who, along with Mr Weisner ( old favorite joke of Mr.W: MR COATNEY: What's worse than walking into a wall with a erection? ME: I dunno, what Mr. Weisner? MR. W: Breaking your nose instead.) who I thought was gay (Even my mom thought so). I was devastated to hear that in addition to marrying Mr. Nelson that she had gotten hit by a car and killed as a pedestrian while trying to cross a street somewhere in Florida. I believe I heard this from someone when I went to County College of Morris in '84. Anyway, she was a fun gal to talk to.
Very nice girl. Infectious smile. She would often look at all the constant pranks and clowning around we would do in band (and boy did we have a lot of fun-you know who you are)during 7th, 8th and 9th grades with a mixture of dismay and amusement. She was very cute and I have only fond memories of Denise. John
I have great memories of Denise growing up in Lake Hiawatha before we moved to Parsippany in 7th grade. Denise, Lisa Lauther and I were inseparable and I can still hear her infectious laugh. She was one of the sweetest people I ever knew. Her death was so tragic but I believe her life was so happy and so are my memories of Denise.
