Scrolling on Facebook this morning, I found the below Obituary for Michael Roberts, class of 1970. I remember Michael as a quiet, shy boy. May he rest eternally in peace.
Michael Roberts was born on July 25th, 1952 in Peekskill, NY to Flora and Leonard Roberts. He graduated from Peekskill High School in 1970 and joined the Navy shortly after where he was able to “see the world on the government’s dime”. He was a proud U.S. Navy Veteran, who served in Vietnam. After returning home, he began working as a ground’s keeper at the VA in Montrose where he worked for 45 years, up until his recent retirement. He was married to Carolyn Roberts on April 24, 1976. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Sonia Zhinin and Michelle Roberts, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Michael was a man of very few words, but had a heart of gold. Besides serving as a volunteer firefighter at Centennial Hose, he was a devoted family man who always made sure that he took care of the ones he loved. Michael enjoyed his peace and quiet, but more than that he enjoyed being surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed the family’s annual trip to the cabins at Lake Taghkanic where he would build a fire each night for them sit and spend quality time together. He enjoyed going on vacations with his wife and sharing new experiences together. He enjoyed decorating his house for every holiday because he knew how much joy it brought his family and so many others. He touched the lives of so many people without ever realizing what an impact he had on others. Michael will be missed dearly, but his love and devotion will never be forgotten.
