Richard "Rock" Arthur Laibson Obituary
Richard Arthur Laibson, known to all as "Rock" for his steadfast nature and perhaps his ability to shake the room with his laughter, left this world on August 20, 2024, in Austin, TX. Born on June 7, 1950, in Peekskill, NY, Rock's journey through life was as full of warmth and humor as the man himself.
Rock's early life in Peekskill set the stage for a man who would become as reliable as the vehicles he adored. After graduating from Peekskill High School, he honorably served his country in the army during the Vietnam years, working in the communications division. On June 29, 1969, he was honorably discharged, and little did he know, that was just his first act. His post-military career saw him relocated to Houston, Texas. Texas became his home, and he frequently claimed he had been “Texised”. He climbed the ranks at SWBT/AT&T, starting as a cable-splicer and eventually retiring as a Switching Manager in 2000. Rock's work ethic was as solid as his name, but it was his humor and friendliness that made him a legend among his colleagues.
Outside of work, Rock was a man of many talents and hobbies. His talent as a Country-Western dancer was the first thing that attracted Deborah to him. His love for antique vehicles was more than just a pastime; it was a full-fledged adventure. Together with his father-in-law, Weldon, Rock could be found at car club meetings, swap meets, and national Early Ford V8 car club tours, sharing laughs and stories as freely as he shared his expertise. Over the years, Rock and Deborah made lasting friendships with many wonderful people whom they initially met at EFV8 club events.
Rock was also a master craftsman, a woodworker whose hands could finesse the toughest of materials into something beautiful. The first two homes he shared with his beloved wife, Deborah, were testaments to his talent. From the vibrant streets of SW Houston to the serene shores of Lake Buchannan, his handiwork turned houses into homes filled with love and laughter. His skills didn't end there; He was always ready to lend a hand with the political activities that Deborah was involved in, supporting both the Fayette County Republican Women and the Fayette County Republican Party.
Rock's friendly demeanor and funny quips made him a favorite among political allies and friends. Rock's family was the heart of his world. His wife, Deborah, was his rock, supporting him through thick and thin. He was also a cherished member of the Frank family, with Weldon and Eunice Frank of Bellville, TX, Linda Frank Whiddon of Houston, TX, and Russell Frank of Hempstead, TX, all holding him in high regard. Rock's sisters, Pat Fiero of Forest Hill, MD, Barbara Slaughter of Newburgh, NY, and Donna Laibson of Fishkill, NY, along with their husbands, Bill, Doug, and Ray, respectively, will remember him as the brother who could always be counted on for a good laugh.
Loving, funny, and friendly - these words barely scratch the surface of describing a man like Rock. He was a beacon of joy to all who knew him, and his ability to turn any situation into a moment of levity was truly a gift. The world may be a little quieter without his chuckles echoing through it, but his spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who loved him. Rock's final curtain call came due to complications from COPD pneumonia, but even in his last moments, one could imagine him cracking a joke to lighten the mood.
Richard Arthur Laibson, "Rock," was a man who lived life to the fullest, laughed in the face of adversity, and loved with all his heart. He has left the stage, but the echoes of his laughter will remain as a fond memory for all who were lucky enough to have known him. Rock on, Richard, rock on.
