Obituary for John A. Cunningham
John A. Cunningham (75) passed away recently in Topsfield, Massachusetts, after a brief illness. He was born and raised in Peekskill, NY, and graduated from Peekskill High School in 1966, where he lettered in varsity wrestling and tennis.
In 1970, he graduated from SUNY College at Cortland with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He taught briefly at the elementary school level in the Boston area before moving to Lake Placid, NY for the greater part of the 1970’s, where he enjoyed the natural beauty of the Adirondacks. He worked various jobs in the Lake Placid area, and continued through the 1980 Winter Olympics.
He later moved to Topsfield, Massachusetts and worked as an employment recruiter for Positions, Inc. for more than two decades. After retiring from that job, he worked part time for the Staples chain of business products in the photo production and printing division.
John loved the outdoors, and spending time hiking in the Hudson Valley, and the Adirondack mountains. He enjoyed gardening, especially planting flowers every year at his residence. For several weeks during the summer months of his youth, he vacationed with his mom, dad, and brothers in Wilmington, NY. in the heart of the Adirondack's, and Long Beach Island in NJ, where his aunt owned a summer home. He continued to enjoy the mountains for many years, vacationing with his own family, hiking and kayaking, and enjoying the wonders of the Adirondack Park.
John was a gifted writer, being both witty and clever. He designed, and sent, his own original birthday and Christmas cards, which were thoroughly enjoyed by family and friends. His kind and loving nature will be greatly missed.
John is survived by a daughter, Meghan, and granddaughter, Dahlia; a son, Dane, his wife, Carrie, and grandchildren, Ananias and Rose Mary; and two brothers, Thomas Cunningham (Susan Personick) of Delmar, NY, and Michael Cunningham (Kathleen McHale) of Cicero, NY. and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life for John will be held in Peekskill, NY at the Holiday Inn on John Walsh Blvd. in the Hudson Room, on Saturday, August 19th beginning at 10:00am. Pastries and coffee will be served, and family and friends are welcome to attend.
