I have been living in a variety of cities - State College for Penn State, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Indianapolis, Southern Indiana and now Lexington, Kentucky. Most of my travels have been "wither thou goest" i.e. transfers due to husbands' job opportunity (I have had 2 husbands). After college I got my first job at Goodwill and tested persons who had employment barriers. I really liked the combination of the entrepreneurial and social services aspect of Goodwill. I tackled a MS in Rehabilitation Psychology and then went to work for the State of Indiana as a trainer for their counselors. I spent 17 years in management training in hospitals, started a couple of businesses, closed them down. Was an outside sales person of trendy items.
When my daughter was born I wanted to be able to work and be around her all the time. There was a company in Rhode Island that owned a group of day care centers and wanted to open a 160 child flagship center in Indpls. The hired me to manage it and I stayed there until Ariel was 2 1/2 and did not want her Mom there every minute and vice versa. I started working for Goodwill of Kentucky as their administative manager was promoted to the Corporate VP and then to my current operational VP position. I am currentlly finishing their president's program and will be able to take over a Goodwill as President and CEO, if I would like to pursue that path. Right now I have too much job satisfaction to want to move up, but the future happens, so maybe one day. I wouldn't mind running the Goodwill in Hawaii or Europe or Southern New Jersey.
My family is still in the surrounding Philadelphia area- Mom is in Willow Grove, Michael is in Perkasie and Laura is in Souderton. My daughter is in college at University of Kentucky and studiying to be Indiana Jones, an archaeologist and how many classes she can duck and still get decent grades. I studied the latter too.
My memory is not sharp about those earlier times, but I do remember that we were a great neighborhod and that I could walk out of the door and go find lots of kids to do stuff with, like Dodgeball, Playing wolf, Baby in the Air, Handball against the steps, basket ball into the high wires and putting out the eletrical or phone system in the neighborhood, chasing lightening bugs. I lived next door to Bill and Bob Beitcher and we took orange juice cans and waxed wires and would throw the cans out the window to each others bedrooms so that we could talk to each other and on the other side was Irv and Perry Rubenstein and later Beth Virship, Karen and Mark Leavitt. Baby sitting for Dr Sigman's daughters Jill and Joy Sigman and Beth Virship and Nathan Synder.
I remember being forced to go to Ballroom dancing at Melrose Bnai Brith, and actually dancing with a boy, yech. Rabbi Kaizen. Being part of a bowling team at Adams Ave Bowling Avenue. Going to Burn Brae in the summer to swim and hang out. Going to the wall in the evening to meet with other friends. Spending time in Karen Sanders basement with Alan Israel and Jay Weintraub. Atlantic City and our parents renting the chairs on the Boardwalk to sit in. Hanging out at Chelsa Avenue and playing pinballs - the old way.
Exploring the creek by Finletter and walking to Finletter in the rain, snow and sleet with Susan Rabin and others. It was uphill both ways as I recall and lots of snow and sleet. Standing waiting for the bus to Olney at ??? near the Catholic school, Cardinal something, and watching the nuns make to girls kneel on the concrete so they could measure the distance from their hem to the ground. Bell bottoms and mini skirts and villiager clothes and penny loafers.
I am sure there will be other memories that I will have as I read your stories.
