Joan and I lived a street away and we went to elementary school together. She was a serious person in part because her mother was ill for a good part of her adolescence and she took on household responsibilities. She and I shared a gym locker, my memories of smelly gym suits all came back and the two us in a frantic rush to dress into those ugly blue outfits and out of them and still be on time for class without dropping everything stuffed into the narrow locker all over the floor.
