Gerri and I were friends since the sixth grade. She only lived two blocks from Connie Sprague and I. Her Mother encourged us to be friends. Gerri was very very smart and much older than her actual years. I think Mrs Levine, Gerri's Mother, thought I was the normal one. Little did she know!!! I learned how to be Jewish and Gerri learned how to be Italian and we both grew to love each other as sisters. One funny story that I remember early in our friendship, I had gone over to play with Gerri at her home. Just coming from New York, Her home was decorated in early modern furniture. What we refer to now as mid-century modern furnishings. My home was early whatever we found at the thrift store that fit!! I look at her walls and asked what was all these pictures hanging up. Now, my walls at my home consisted of paint by numbers that I did or photos of my family. Mrs Levine said, my dear this is ART. ART???? That was my first introduction to the arts. I always remember that day so well. Gerri spent many years in Berkly California in research. She decided to move back to Az and retired and spent her remaining days in Payson. Even though Gerri and I were as different as night and day, she always encouraged me in all my crazy adventures and life. As her dear husband said, She always was on your team and still is just now here anymore. She was a true friend and I miss her very much.
A few years ago I was showing my car at the Payson car show when I recognised Gerri taking pictures of all the cars. I asked her if she remembered me and we talked for a good long time. She invited my wife and I to her beautiful place after the show. Her and her husband were very gracious. They had a ping pong table in the garage and we played until our legs gave out. Gerri showed us some of her art work and pictures she had taken over the years. We treasure those memories and I think of her every time we are in Payson.
I remember Gerri from Mr. Millers bio class, and our Science projects at ASU, hers was brilliant about genetics before our time travel on Gerri say hi to Carl Sagan!!!
