In Memory

Charles A. , Jr. (Sandy) McPhee

Charles “Sandy” A. McPhee Jr. died on Dec 16, 2021.

Sandy McPhee, a longtime Piedmont resident, died on the afternoon of December 16, 2021, at home with his wife by his side.

Born January 15th, 1945, in San Francisco, he was the oldest son of Margaret and Charles McPhee of Piedmont. He moved to Piedmont from Los Angeles and attended Piedmont High School where he graduated in 1963.

After High School, he went to the University of Oregon where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.  Sandy transferred to the University of California, Berkeley where he graduated with a degree in economics.  After graduation, Sandy married Sue Mulford at St. Leo’s Church in Oakland on July 1, 1967. He then entered the Naval Officer Candidate School and served in the Navy, living in Rhode Island, Japan, Hawaii, San Diego, and Santa Cruz, picking up lots of friends and fun memories along the way. After an Honorable Discharge from the United States Navy, he moved back to the Bay Area and attended Hasting Law School in 1970.

Sandy practiced law in the Bay Area for the last 50 years, and was a member of the California Bar Association since December of 1973. He was a member of the Pioneers of California and a longtime member of the Claremont Country Club as well.

Sandy enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He loved to cook, read, and listen to old-time rock n’ roll. He was an expert in politics, airplanes and World War II history. He was also a very talented craftsman, remodeling and redesigning the home he lived in with his family on Craig Avenue in Piedmont. He was beloved by his family and friends, and loved entertainment, but most of all he cherished the time he spent with Sue, his wife of 54 years.

He adored his wife, children and grandchildren. Everyone who knew Sandy enjoyed his wonderful wit and sense of humor. He was sociable and down to earth, and he loved having conversations with people. Known as “the Sarge” by his children's friends, he was a well known face in Piedmont.

Charles Albert McPhee Jr. is survived by his wife Suellen Mulford McPhee, and three children, Charles A. McPhee III and his wife Alison of Lake Oswego, OR, Margaret “Mollie” McPhee Callahan and her husband Patrick of Pleasant Hill, CA, and Robert Lloyd McPhee and his wife Jodie of Centennial, CO.  He is also survived by his 7 grandchildren, Charlie and Kelly McPhee of Lake Oswego, Katie, Abigail and Jake of Pleasant Hill, and Jordan and Rachael of Centennial.

He is also survived by his sisters Patrice Barlow, and husband Scott, Margaret “Missy” Nelson and husband Fred, Marcy Potter and husband Adam, and his two brothers Dean McPhee and wife Anne Marie and David McPhee, along with a large extended family.

Sandy meant a lot to many people, and he will be greatly missed by his entire family and friends.

A Catholic Mass will be held at Corpus Christi on Saturday, February, 19 at 1:00 pm at 1 Estates Drive, Piedmont, CA.

In lieu of flowers, Sandy suggests any memorial donations may be made to the “Tunnel to Towers Foundation”; you can contact the foundation at (718)-987-1931, and send letters to 2381 Hylan Blvd, Staten Island NY, 10306

I am sad to hear about the passing of Sandy.  Luckily at the mini-reunion at the recreation center a few years ago, Sandy and I had a long talk, catching up a little bit on the many years since high school. We recalled how much fun we had after school and on weekends, at least the bits we remembered. My condolences to Sue and their family.
