I will never forget my friend Kendall, who was a very warm and friendly guy and fun to know in school.
I know a little about his service to our country. He was drafted into the Army and went through boot camp at Fort Ord, Monterey. He was designated as an infantryman and after Advanced Training he was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division and was sent to Vietnam with the 39th Infantry on January 4, 1968.
After five months of combat, he was on an operation SE of Saigon near My Tho in the Mekong River Delta when Kendall "Gave It All" to multiple mortar fragmentation wounds and was killed outright on June 3, 1968.
Corporal Thompson's sacrifice will always be remembered. His comrades know his soul is in Fiddlers Green and Heaven.

Half way down the trail to Hell,
In a shady meadow green.
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped,
Near a good old time canteen.
And this eternal resting place,
Is known as Fiddlers' Green.
Marching past straight through to Hell,
The Infantry are seen.
Accompanied by Engineers,
Artillery and Marines.
For none but shades of the Cavalrymen,
Dismount at Fiddlers' Green.
Though some go curving down the trail,
To seek a warmer scene.
No Trooper ever gets to Hell,
Ere he's emptied his canteen.
And so goes back to drink again,
With friends again at Fiddlers' Green.
And so when man and horse go down,
Beneath a saber keen.
Or in a roaring charge of fierce melee,
You stop a bullet clean.
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head,
And go to Fiddlers' Green.

Kendall was a class mate of mine, Kendall was quiet and shy. Kendall was gentle and kind. I'm glad I new Kendall even though only for a short time.
