Tom Feher

Tom Feher

Tom graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 1974 and earned a graduate degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1997.  He was a brilliant mathematician and engineer who struggled with depression and took his own life on July 16, 2005, in Greenfield, MA, where he had been active in civic affairs.  He was never married and had no children.

Tom's brother Albert writes:  "Much too smart for the rest of the world. Graduated from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland with a degree in mathematics. Several degrees in engineering and similar fields.  Damn shame. The world was too slow for him."

Tom and I went all thru school together, starting at St. Maurice.   We were part of a group of about 15 students who skipped 3rd grade.  (The rest of you know who you are!) We spent the summer, between 2nd & 4th grade, as a group, learning our multiplication tables together.  In 4th grade, the nun made us all sit together at the front of the class for the entire year.  (Gosh, I hated being centered out like that!)

So, Tom was someone with whom I traveled thru 12 years of school.   I remember Tom as being really smart, that he was shy, and that he had a nice smile.  I am sorry that he left this life too soon.

Since we learned of Tom's passing, his brother, Albert, and I have become friends on Facebook.   Tom is missed by many!
