History of Keystone Oaks

The current school district, Keystone Oaks, was formed in July, 1965, due to school district reorganization as mandated by the Pennsylvania legislature.  The merger was only accomplished after a special appeal to the State Board of Education since the three districts desirous of merging were not bordering one another.  The exception to the shared boundary requirement was made because of the long history of cooperation between the three districts of Castle Shannon, Dormont and Green Tree.

In order to arrive at a new name for the high school, a contest was held.  The winner received a $50 U.S. Savings Bond.  After reading hundreds of entries, the School Board selected the name "Keystone Oaks," submitted by Thomas Clark, Class of 1965.  Tom created the new name by taking the "key" from the door in Dormont, the "stone" from the castle in Castle Shannon, and the "oaks" from the tree in Green Tree.
