John Chester Thrailkill, son of John A. and Nancy Thrailkill was born February 27, 1860 at South English in Keokuk county, Iowa, and passed away at his home southeast of Dexter, Thursday evening, April 11th, 1946 at the age of 86 years, one month and 14 days.
He was left an orphan early in life, at the age of eleven and went to live with an uncle who furnished him with a home until he came to Madison county where for nine years he lived with Mr. and Mrs. Kirby Lee.
He received his education in the country schools and was converted in early manhood and gave his heart and life to the Lord Jesus Christ to whom he remained always faithful.
He was a true and loving husband and father, devoted to his wife and his family. John Thrailkill was a good friend and neighbor. Ready and willing at all times to lend a helping hand and to carry his share of any and all responsibilities.
He was a lover of the beautiful and took great delight in watching things grow. One of his hobbies was the planting of trees, plants and shrubs, always looking with faith to the future and the developing of the things he had planted. He loved the farm and this with his family became the delight of his life. The Golden Wedding Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Thrailkill was observed on September 24, 1940 at their country home. It was a delightful occasion with all of the sons and daughters present to enjoy the happy event.
It was on September 24, 1889 that he was united in marriage to Caroline Amanda Holderbaum. To this union were born sixteen children, nine sons and seven daughters. Four of the sons have preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing his loving and faithful wife and the following children: Charlie Thrailkill, Mrs. Amy Pitcock and Maurice Thrailkill all of Earlham; Mrs. Lulu Faust, Mrs. Alice Bradshaw, Mrs. Rachel Wasson, Ray Thrailkill and Chester Thrailkill all of Dexter; Mrs. Nettie Howell of Winterset; Tillie Heifner of Greenfield; Mrs. Cora Hunter and Wayne Thrailkill of Florida, together with thirty-three grandchildren and one sister Mrs. Jennie Williams, Tipton, Iowa, one brother J. A. Thrailkill of Aurora, Nebraska, a number of other relatives and a host of friends.
