Let's see, where do I start, 1969 is a long time ago! I have to refresh my memory--ok, after H.S., I attended Northern in Havre for a year thinking I'd like to be an elementary teacher, but wasn't focused, (having too much fun I think), met my future hubby and lots of new friends, some of whom I still communicate with and see now and then. Decided not to go back to school that 2nd yr, worked at the Havre Hospital for a yr instead, and then in May, 1971, got married to George in Couer D'Alene, Idaho, and it's been quite a ride ever since! We lived /worked at the family ranch north of Whitewater for 7 years (ranch was about 8 miles south of the Canadian border), had 3 kids during that time, then decided to branch out on our own and get our own place. George has 4 brothers, so the prospects of eventually taking over the home place were pretty slim. Bought our farm/ranch north of Wagner, MT. (18 miles nw of Malta)in 1978 and 2 more kids later, we are still here, amazingly enough. Our profession definitely has its challenges such as drought, hail, grasshoppers, wind, structure fires, low prices for grain/cattle, etc., as anyone who is in agriculture will understand. That being said, there is no better place to raise a family, as they learn many of life's lessons here. They were all involved in sports and 4-H, etc. We've definitely had our up's and down's raising 5 kids, but I must say, they've all turned out absolutely amazing and all like to come home to visit, which makes me happy. And now 6 grandkids to boot, which is the icing on the cake! I've had several jobs to earn some extra income, including teacher's aid in a K-1 classroom in the Dodson School for about 10 yrs, school bus driver, and most recently drive for FedEx part-time, which gets me out and about just to see what's going on. Our oldest son lives at home and helps out on the place, which is great since George has developed arthritis.
My hobbies include yardwork(trying to get something to grow around here is always a challenge), remodeling various rooms in our house, being on the Fairboard for 10 yrs. I used to sew alot of the kids clothes, but don't have to do that anymore. (Does anybody even sew anymore? I don't know). I help when needed on the farm, summer-fallowing, truck driver, work cows, etc, but not as much as I used to, which is fine with me. I see my siblings probably at least once a year, except Juanita, which might be every 2 yrs. when we have the McOmber family reunions. Dad passed away in Jan. 2007, still miss him alot. Mom lives in Fairfield and will turn 84 (I think!). George's family all live in Phillips County except one brother, and his Dad just turned 88, still drives a tractor now and then. I think the older I get, the more I appreciate our families and friends.
I could say lots here, from toilet-papering a teacher's TV antenna to running someone's slip up the flag pole, BUT I think I'll refrain for now. One memory that comes to mind is when our entire class of 18 piled into Warren's Ford and drove around Power. That was quite an accomplishment! hahaha! Good times.
