In Memory

Stephen Harris

From Brad Holm, July 2022:

Steven Harris of our class died a couple of years ago. He was divorced and somewhat separated from his family. So, believe it or not, no obituary was ever published. He was sailing around the earth at the time, when a nighttime squall first swamped then broke apart his boat. His body was never recovered.

Brad, thank you for sharing this sad information and photograph.  Steve and I were good friends during high school.  But I lost contact with him many years ago.  I was hoping to reconnect with him at the reunion.  Brent Gardner.

During high school, my dad took Steve and me deer hunting.  Steve and I each shot a deer.  The next day, Steve told me that someone had stolen his deer during the night, as it hung from the rafters of their garage.  I said, "That's too bad."  But when I mentioned it to my dad, he pointed out that Steve's single mom had been counting on his deer to feed their family.  So, we took half of my deer to them.

I love this Brent. What a kind young man you were and are.

Brad, thank you so much for sharing this. Wow! I never knew. We just watched a special on Netflix about an Australian 16 year old girl, who circumnavigated the globe in a sailboat. That movie brought to light what Steve may actually have experienced himself. It was treacherous.  So sorry!

I posted another pic of Steve on his boat. I believe this was taken the year he died, as he set sail on his final adventure.

Thanks for posting the information about Steve, Brad, and thanks for your memories, Brent.  I was also looking forward to seeing him this year.
