Gary “Popsi” Newsom, Sr., 71, passed away Wednesday morning, July 13, 2022. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 18th at First Baptist Church with Dr. David Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Quanah Memorial Park.  Visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m., Sunday evening at Smith Funeral Home Chapel.

Gary Paul Newsom was born to the late Paul and Evelyn (Lantz) Newsom on January 15, 1951, in Quanah, where he was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Quanah High School in 1969 and married Brenda Lamb on December 18, 1971. Together they raised two children. Gary led a life of service to the community: he was a member of First Baptist Church; past President of Quanah Country Club; served Quanah Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years, part of that time as President; former Quanah Mayor; and was a past President of Quanah School Board. He was an owner/operator of Newsom Auto Supply, which was the family business started by his father, and where Gary worked all of his life. He was an avid fisherman and adored his family.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Newsom of Quanah; one son, Gary Paul Newsom, Jr., and wife Traysha of Quanah; one daughter, Anjolyn Parrott, and husband Trent of Flower Mound; one brother, Craig Newsom of Quanah; 4 grandchildren, Taylor Reed and husband Chase, Taryn Bivins and husband Dillon, Garyn Pechacek, and Trey Parrott; 4 great grandchildren, Gus Bivins, Witten Newsom, Tucker Bivins, and Taysom Reed; his mother-in-law, JoAnn Lamb of Wichita Falls; nephews and nieces, Shawn Newsom, Jamie Orr, Shelby Parr, and Steven Newsom.

Gary was preceded in death by one brother, Randy Newsom, in 2019.

The family suggests that memorials be made in his honor to Quanah Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 186, Quanah, Texas 79252 or Quanah Sr. Citizens, P.O. Box 492, Quanah, Texas 79252.
