June Duke

June McAllister Duke, 1920 - 2017

June McAllister Duke, 96, of Quitman, died Friday, May 26, in Quitman.

She was born July 29, 1920, in Quitman to the late Hilliard and Blanche Derr McAllister.

June Duke was a teacher for many years, retiring from Quitman High School where she served as their high school librarian and yearbook advisor.  She also taught in Union Grove,Mineola, Alba-Golden and Lone Grove.

She graduated from Quitman High School in 1938 as the valedictorian and class president.  She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BA from East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce in 1941.  While at ETSTC June was the Homecoming Queen in 1940 and May Queen in 1941.  Mrs Duke also received her Masters of Education from the same college in 1954.

She is survived by a daughtier, Lydia Cothran of Quitman; sons Michael Duke and wife, Patti, of Scroggins, Brent Duke of Quitman; three grandchildren Chris Cothran, Alyssa Duke Burton, Amiee Duke; and two Great-grandchildren, Ronan Michael Burton and Audria June Burton.

June Duke was also preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Robert Conrade Duke; and a son Hal Hilliard Duke.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Quitman High School Library.
