Harris Junior “Doc” Clanton died on January 26, 2008 after a brief illness. He was born on January 11, 1925 in Wood County, Texas at his parent’s home north of Highway 154 along present day Wood County Road 3120. His Father and Mother were the late Green Lee and Ethel Clanton. Doc attended the nearby Lone Star School and later graduated from Quitman High School in 1942. After graduation he moved to Dallas, Texas where he built military barracks and delivered milk in a one horse wagon. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served as an Aviation Electronics Technicians Mate in California and Hawaii. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the Asian-Pacific Campaign Medal. After his Honorable Discharge from Naval service in 1946, he returned to Dallas where he worked at several jobs. In 1947, he married LaHoma Caldwell. In 1949 he moved his family to Pampa, Texas. In 1950 he moved his family to Amarillo, Texas. In 1955 he moved his family back to Quitman. Doc worked at several jobs and professions throughout his life. He spent time as a carpenter, milkman, salesman, farmer, cattle raiser, barbeque man and highway maintenance man. In 1987 he retired from the Texas Department of Highways and Public Transportation office after 24 years of service and began raising cattle full time. Doc & LaHoma enjoyed their retirement traveling through out the United States. They joined the Lake Country RV Travelers Club in 1998 where they enjoyed many friends with whom they met and camped. Like his Dad before him he enjoyed raising cattle, being around his wife and family. He also enjoyed his times with his grandchildren and his great grand children. He is survived by LaHoma his wife of 61 years, his children Harris and wife Shirley, Gregg and wife Lyddia, Deborah Kinsey and husband Robby, Craig and wife Connie and Kevin and wife Kara. He was preceded in death by his son, Anthony in 1991. He has 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
