Mary Susan Bass Mumford
Raleigh
Mary Susan Bass Mumford, 69, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at her home. She was and is constantly surrounded by the love of her family and friends.
Susan was born in Raleigh on February 23, 1944, the only daughter of Mary Frances Bishop Bass of Raleigh, NC and Mack Gilbrey Bass, Jr. of Wilson, NC. She attended Sherwood Bates Elementary, Daniels Middle School, and graduated from Broughton High School with the class of 1961. She received an Associate's degree from East Carolina University and Peace College, and also attended North Carolina State University, where she met Ray Hulette Mumford. Susan and Ray were married for 30 years and had two sons, who were Susan's greatest joys and gifts.
Susan retired from the State of North Carolina after 30 years of service. She began her career with the Department of Probation, and retired as an administrative assistant with the Biology Department at North Carolina State University. The greater part of her career was devoted to her teacher's assistant positions at Jeffrey's Grove Elementary and Pleasant Union Elementary. She loved children and is remembered fondly by many of her students. She was named the Teacher's Assistant of the Year at Jeffrey's Grove in 1980, and was in the top ten teacher's assistants nominated for the award in the state in 1980.
Susan stayed busy after retirement and volunteered her time, love, and energy to the Big Sister/Little Sister program, The Safe Place, Meals on Wheels, Rex Hospital, and was a Guardian ad Litem for abused or neglected children in Wake County. Helping others brought her great joy. She loved gardening in her backyard and soaking up the sun's rays on the deck of her dear friend Jim's beach house. Over the past six years, her favorite past time was playing, reading and giving treats to her two grandsons.
Susan was so well cared for later in life by many caregivers, nurses, and volunteers in her home. No words can express how much they all mean to her, her family, and her friends.
Susan is survived by her son, David Miles Mumford, daughter-in-law, Jessica Lee Mumford, and her two grandsons, Charles Aidan and Colin Michael, who were the lights of her life. She is also survived by aunts Marguerite Paschal and Bobs Dodd, and many loved cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved son, Charles Stuart Mumford.
A visitation with family and friends will be held on Monday, May 13 from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, May 14 at 11:00 am. Both services will be held at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, 1801 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27605. Memorial gifts may be given to Hospice of Wake County, The All American Dachshund Rescue.
