I belong to the Daughters of the American Revolution & the Daughters of the Confederacy.
My first grade class with Becky Shankle, and twins - Jim & Peggy Jefferies and Bill & Bernice Bazemore. Five Points - going to Gattis' Drug Store and getting a Pepsi Ice before going to ballet & tap class after school.
Sherwood Bates - Mrs Kennedy's 3rd grade class - the many plays she had us to do. Miss Apple's 6th grade - having to stay after school a lot because of a few boys cutting up during class. Going to Johnson's Drug Store after school and getting a cherry coke before going homeh.
Hayes Barton Pool - taking swimming lessons at age 7 & being able to go swimming without my Mother being there. Going to Brownies and Girl Scouts - we still have get togethers after all of these years!
Riding my bike to Cameron Village to go shopping on Saturdays. Getting back together with friends at Daniels - joining the Civil Air Patrol with Becky Shankle, Val Paget, Kay Yearby, Jim Jefferies, Ralph Scofield, Butch Hill, Bill Stuckey, Bobby Stuart, and a few others.
Going to the L&M on Friday & Saturday nights. My Dad taking my cousin, Frank Taylor, and me to Sears parking lot on Sunday afternoon to learn how to drive!
Broughton - Mrs Fish's 10th Grade Biology class and getting help from Tom with those horrible earthworms and frogs. Mrs Stell's math class. Being in History Class with Mary March and with Seniors who had to have their exam early so we only went through WWII. My being called to report to the Office after school over the loud speaker only to find that David Clegg had been hit in the head during gym class - his parents were out of town and my mother had to come get him and take him to see Dr Senter. We found out later that John Stover had accidently hit David in the head while in gym class.
Making my gown in Home Ec for the Senior Prom. So many memories - thanks to you all! ** During my college years with Gay Herring at Campell College, we would ride together from Buies Creek to Raleigh.
I was with Vivie Lear at Greensboro College in 1962. While being back home in Raleigh after a snow storm, I got a call from Betty Ruth Johnson asking if she and her Duke friend could come over to the house and go sledding on Churchill Road - it was so good to see Betty Ruth again and to recall a lot memories of going sledding on Churchill Road.
2025
Lived in St Louis in 1966 until 1972. Loved Visiting Anheuser Busch and seeing the Clydesdales in the pasture; went into the St Louis Arch the second day it opened - the view was spectacular; went to the Playboy Club for many years and enjoyed the food, drinks, and seeing the Playboy Bunnies! While at work, a Tornado hit the building - we were saved by going into the basement; we were working overtime one Saturday and the ceiling tiles started coming down; we got under our desks - an Earthquake hit!
In 1972 we adopted our Son and 4 days later we were transferred to Houston. We lived across the street from the Johnson Space Center - an awesome place to visit! We worked in Galveston - in January 1973 it snowed!! Now, those people really cannot drive in the snow!! Our 45 minute trip back home took us 2 hours!! Our next door neighbor was from St Louis too and we had a good laugh!!
Val Paget (class of 1962) moved to Houston in 1975. Our mothers were great friends and would fly down to visit us. We would meet at the San Jacinto Monument to each lunch overlooking the Houston Ship Channel. Val got her pilot's license and bought a Glider. We would go flying on the weekends - up to 6,000 feet in the air several times. It is very quiet up there!
In 1979 Hurricane Claudette hit and we got 5 feet of water in our house. We went next door to a 2 story house with 6 other families and saved the next afternoon by boat - climbed out the window onto the veranda! Our builder and his crew came and began tearing out the walls and floors and 30 Church members came and took everything out of the house into the driveway! People came by and wanted the furniture so by afternoon, our driveway was clear! After 30 days, we were back into our house!
My mother was not well so we moved back to Raleigh in 2004. Attended our class reunions and stayed at Betty Ruth Johnson Angel's home for the weekend! I retired in 2019 from Interviews By Underwriters. I belong to a Crochet Group of ladies in Saxapahaw. During the Pandemic, we zoomed several days a week for 2 hours to chat and crochet. I made 8 Afghans during those 2 1/2 years! Houston has a Tropical Storm to flood the City. Our Crochet Ladies sent 30 of our Afghans to a Methodist Church to give away. They were appreciative!
In June 2025 Saxapahaw was flooded and 4 feet of water was inside our church and Fellowship Hall and in the basement of our parsonage. We have had many Fundraisers to repair the damage to our 1898 Saxapahaw United Methodist Church. We appreciate all the many Volunteers who came to help clean out the damaged walls, floors and pews in the Church and our Fellowship Hall. We pray we have the Fellowship Hall Completed by January 2026. Our Pastor Mandy and family moved back into the Parsonage 3 weeks ago. Then we start rebuilding the Sanctuary! God is in charge!!
