RE: The World Cup Posted Saturday, January 7, 2023 08:01 PM Dan, It was a great final as far as action was concerned. But as far as a sport is concerned, it might be one of the most boring there is. Playing for 90+ minutes many times with no victor unless it's a championship and it ends like this one did with a lot of luck involved is pretty sorry in my opinion. I think they should just add time until someone scores. That seems more fair to me. As far as Madonna is concerned, you can have her. I don't see any of her contributions to society as being noteworthy. BAK |

The World Cup Posted Sunday, January 8, 2023 02:08 AM Hey Barry, Happy New Year! :-) Sorry you don't like soccer. I've been closely involved with the game for many years now, and have come to love it--the beautiful game requiring so much skill and artistry. I refereed at the national and international level for a number of years and was close to making the World Cup, but FIFA and the USSF lowered the maximum age limit when I was within reach to make the 1990 Cup so I was subsequently dropped from the list for consideration (according to a USSF selection committee member)--so alas. But my favorite sports event today far and away is the World Cup--there's nothing like it for me. But each to their own. :-) And I think the video replays and assistant referees makes the game even more interesting to watch and much fairer. That beautiful song was a tribute to Argentina and an apology from Eva for the struggles of that country against a ruthless dictator --her huband, JuanPeron, and certainly her in her behind-the-scenes ruthless support for him. 'Like her husband did, Evita (or Eva) used power ruthlessly.' Your Colombian friends see 'futbol' playing on every pitch and street corner. America is getting there, but so much competition from the other sports has its moving to the front of the line at a snail's pace. Hey to your lovely wife. Your friend, Dan About as political as I get. :-) And about Eva Peron, not Madonna, although Madonna received great acclaim for her performance as Evita (Eva).
And another rendition of 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina'--Suzan Erens and And Andre Rieu and his orchestra....
