Mr Marshall only got me once, for chewing gum. Corliss Payne got paddled every ten minutes. I remember her wearing layers of petti coats, to obsorb the blows. Didnt know he reffed football.

 Doug and Mike,

Your comments about Irving Marshall awoke sixth grade nightmares at Shear School. The man was a huge (6'5" @300lbs) source of intimidation for so many of us. He sat (most of the time) at his huge wooden desk on a platform in order for him to look down the rows at us hoping to catch one of us goofing around or simply not paying attention. He seriously ordered wooden yardsticks by the dozen to break over us. Oh, I remember them well! And yes, Corliss, she gave him fits when she arrived from Detroit in our class. He didn't know how to handle her mouth. We all quivered as she told him off and took his rath with grit. Do you remember the time he threw the chalk board erasure at me sitting in the first row? I ducked and he hit the girl (?) right behind me in the eye and she freaked out causing all kinds of grief. She screamed and carrying on (understandably) until the principal had to intervene. I think the incident was a major cause of his eventual departure. What a piece of work!

I was scared to walk in the hall when he would stand outside of his class room.

mmr. Riehl, it is very nice to Hear from you. You know more about what we are trying to remember, like did Mr Young play guard or running back at M.S.U. As I recall, you attended Hillsdale and my guess would be you were a running back, because you were our running backs coach. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

Bruce:  I did bump into Mr Marshall one more time at the Silverdome attending a Lions game with my oldest son'  I must have been 28 or 29.  Guess who was with Mr Marshall?  the one and only Mr Riehl,  I am sending you this note because Mr Marshall was a big man however not as big as you remember.  after bumping into him I would guess him at about 5'8 maybe 250 to 260 lbs. Maybe Mr Riehl can enlighten us.  I also remember old Irv would walk down the class room isles and if your feet were in the isle he would step on them and give you the look.  He also came up behind me once and hit in the back of the head with a rubberband, he was quite a piece of work.  When we were 12 years old he appeared like a giant.  Hope all is well with you and your family and you are enjoying our senior years.  Happy holidays to you and your family.

Mike:  I believe Gordy attended Michigan State, here we go with our memory differences..Heres a bit of info I dont know if I ever told you.  I knew coach Rogers he was the Redford Union football coach while we were in school.  He and his family are from the Brighton area.  His wife was the Brighton chamber president for years.  She retired from the position.  Two of their sons are in politics Mike who is a fixture in D.C and Bill up in Lansing know them both well.  Their oldest son is retired from the armed forces highly decorated, I believe a Major or Colonel something way up there.  Dont know him.  Got to know these people from  my banking career in Livingston County.  Remember Gerri Dustman she was the mayor of Howell John Pikkerinan is a retired judge from Livingston County.  THS was well represented in the county by Gerri, John and myself.  Did all this and cant even remember opening up a book, paid for it later had to read stuff 12 times to get it....brother Steve still communicates with a lot of THS grads.  Guys that use to push me around and laugh. :>}  Are you playing winter golf with your pink balls.....Oh by the way its 77 today,  Happy turkey day

Mr Riehl:  I here you are spending your winters in Venice Fl.  Our youngest son lives in Englewood.  Our two boys graduated from Lemon Bay HS.  The oldest in 86 the youngest in 88 both were very successful wrestlers,  The oldest wrestled and graduated from Central Mi.  The youngest wrestled and graduated from Ohio State.  We lived in Englewood for 8 years spent part of my career there.  Did you know Frank Santangelo's son FP played major league baseball.  Came up with Montreal I believe and retired while with the Giants.  Hope you and the Mrs are doing well, have a safe and healthy holiday season.

Hello Miles hope you are doing well

mike,

gordie played guard at State but hurt a knee and a shoulder so he didn't get to play much. I was with him 2 wks before he died. he bought a far near a little town called ubly in the thumb. 80 acres. he lover to hunt. they fixed a hospital bed for him in the living room so he could look out this big window and see the deer. you know we have lost a lot of our old teachers, Irv's gone, knotts, gordie, mracna, harms, block, rodolosi, and many others. I am 82 but still cruising along. I was a running back a hillsdale and at Coolry high school. Again I was priveliged to coach and teach so many great kids. I still remember most of them and run into kids avery where.

I can remember being intimidated by Mr Marshall, too, and being very relieved that I had Gene Dustin for 6th grade. However, along with Penny Haight King and Gayle Woloch Ulrich, I had the opportunity to teach with Irv at Marshall Jr High and found he was quite kind and always willing to help other teachers. He also remembered me as a skinny toothpick in 6th grade!

Mr. Riehl, I was right about Gordie playing guard at state, and you playing running back at Hillsdale (remember they called coaching U)

. So.... how come I cant remember why I walked into the room?

Mr. Riehl, how about Mr. Pasternak is he still alive?  I believe he coached our 9th grade baseball team and some football.  Dont remember what year.  I always thought he was a pretty good guy.

I'm planning on a reunion of families I grew up with who lived on the same street (Sioux) or friends of the Sioux families. Tentatively we plan on meeting in Michigan July 25, 26th 2015. Right now I have interest from Doug Risher, David Starr, Roger Hamilton, Sue Hamilton, Penny Hamilton, Karl Stram, Patrica Wright, Cliff Smith, and Bill Diamond. Anyone can attend especially Thurston alumni. I'm trying to get in touch with Thurston alumni from class of 1961. I don't have a place yet but leaning towards the place where we have our last class reunion. If anyone can help locate a point of contact for the class of 1961 or with point of contact for the hotel where we had our reunion, I'd appreciate it. Send me a note or call my cell phone 972 - 489 - 9688. Thanks.
