It sure is great to hear from old friends. You all know that I have always been a Quiet,Unassuming guy. It's just that my friends tend to lead me astray! As for being able to express myself, I'm not sure if my mouth has gotten me in or out of trouble!

Patti,

Do you remember Bermuda Shorts Days?  I think we bought tags from one of the clubs like American Field Service and then got to wear Bermudas.  Otherwise, girls had to wear skirts every day!  Remember shirt waist dresses, stitch down pleated skirts, Garland sweaters and Peter Pan collars?  And white gym shoes and socks.  We were stylin'.    Even when we started at Michigan State girls only got to wear slacks when the temperature was low enough.  Luckily that changed pretty quickly.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I got home this evening from helping our son and his family move into new dwellings and checked my email.  You've got mail: Something from the THS message service.  One of us that was thought 'gone' is 'alive and kicking.'  Robert (Bob) Ryckman is alive.  He found our site and our comments and was pleased by them.  Hopefully we will hear more from him when he has a chance to complete his 'Profile.'

He will be on vacation for the next two weeks and sends his greetings and thanks.

Yes, Marilyn I remember paying money to some group to have shorts for a day at school.  We also used to have bells on ribbons in our hair or on our shoes for the Xmas Holiday.  We had to removed them when we went into the Library & there was a sign on the door telling us to remove all bells.  The Gals always wondered why on Monday all the guys had dress shirts on.  We used to think that the guy's mothers had them put on those left over shirts from use on  Sunday at church. I also hated the gym out fits we had to put on.  They were awful looking and not comfortable.  Did guy's ever have jeans on in school?

Patti and Marilyn,

I remember the dress code thing but I don't know anything about dress shirts on Monday Patti. I don't think we could wear jeans but I seem to remember "White Levi's Day"...and only one day. And the girls' gym outfits were pretty pathetic. Why would they do that to you guys?

Oh and Marilyn, those whte socks were stylish dontcha know?

Linda, I think the range is in the area under the pool.  Probably because we had an ROTC at one time.  I remember the archery range under the pool.

Patti I know what you mean about the dress code, I guess we and our parents had common sense back then.  Haven't you noticed that in the last 10 years, most restaurants, and stores have gone to uniform shirts.  A lot less hassle for them to deal with.  I know at the Ninth Grade Center I worked at, dress code was a real issue.

I don't remember guys wearing jeans.  I remember going to a Saddle Shop on Beach and Schoolcraft , maybe it was Elliots, and buying a pair of levi's and coming home and cutting off the legs when jean cut-offs were popular. (Much to my Mother's horror). No I am not taking about "Daisy Dukes", they were just above the knee and then we rolled them up.

Good moring all:  I've got a few dress code memories, I never saw the "Code" in print, but I heard about it often from Mr. Block.  I always thought he made it up as he went along!   For some reason I was always on his radar????

In 1955, I was 10yrs old, Hollywood brought to the big screen, a movie call "Rebel Without a Cause", staring Natalie Wood, & James Dean.  Dean wore a red "Baracuda" style jacket & blue jeans.  This movie made such an earily empression on me,  I had already purchased the jacket, so I related, but unfortunately my parents had seen the movie also, & no way would they let me wear the jeans, to complete the package. I think in their defense, they could see a rebel in the making,  but, afterall I was just 10.  "NO JEANS, for me.........OK, fast forward, It's 1961, we're now in high school, Hollywood brings another epic to the big screen, once again, staring Natalie Wood & George Charkiris, in "West Side Story".  Another major impression on lit'l Billy............George Charkiris flying around the screen in very bright colored shirts, & very tight pants. Oh my.???

In europe, major things are happening in mens fashion.  The Beatles don't hit our shore till 1964, but their music is here, as well as their long hair, & Edwardian Style.  While shopping at Northland Shopping Center, across 8 mile, [ I know, I don't think I'd venture over there today}........I discover a little known mens shop called Todds Mens Wear.  Catering only, to the new contempory Edwardian style, encluding very tight pants.  I think they were refered to as "Pegged".............Anyway, I sucked up this new style, & brought the pants home, much to my parents dismay!!!  But they were still stuck on the "blue jean" ban, so I got away w/ wearing them.  OK, back to school, Mr. Block { still in his 50's flat top mode} was not at all happy w/ this new tight pants expression.  I can remember like yesterday, he would say, "if you can't take your pants off over your shoes" they're too tight.!!! Always followed by the threat of taking you into the mens room to prove it. [ That never happened]  I always wore soft soled moccasins to school, just incase!!!!

I also remember wearing a white silk scarfs w/ our varsity jackets, where did that come from??.  Was that a varsity club thing.?   Cathy, maybe Ed knows??? It came down from the very cool upper class guys, I think????

A bunch of us on the track team got blue berets and put a winged foot emblem on them, painted white.  If you were the "Rebel Without a Cause," we were the "Rebels Without a Clue."

But Steve, the berets went so well with our white fleece warm up suits that the track club helped buy!

but we were without a clue.

Now, I have to find that dress code that I saw in one of the THS oldies but Goodies boxes of the THS memories I have at my house from the pass reunions.  I ran across this Dress code and  then went on to the THS web site and read the todays dress code.  What a difference between the 2 dress codes.  May be I'll try put this up on the memory boards we are making.  I really do remember the guys walking around the halls in the stove pipe pants.  I thought they were really cool and I even liked the black pointed shoes guys had on with those pants.  I also remember the white scarfs the guys wore with their jackets.   Girls, do you remember the Gum Drops shoes.  Mine were black suede. the Gals also had  a Bucket purse. We wore our skirts below the knee and today they are 6 inches above the knee. I also hated my swim suit, It was black and had no support at all and was just ugly.  The rubber swiming caps were the pits also. My hair was long and I could hardly get my cap on and then my hair got wet even with that aweful cap on.  I would get up in the morning, get all  my make up on and hair nicely done and my 1st hour class was swiming, I looked awful for the rest of the day.  I tried every trick I could to get out of the class or get a later one and nothing worked. You know, the guys really had it good with their Gym and swiming clothes.

Some how I managed to stay in my navy shorts and white blouse for PE.  I don't know how that happened, because I took PE all 4 years.  Those royal blue one piece gym outfits were ugly and uncomfortable, especially if you were tall. I look back now and I think they must have only offered swim 1st period.  Everyone I know had it at that time and it sure did a job on our hair for 6 weeks.  No product except dippity doo, and no hair dryers allowed.

I remember the pegged pants, Edd had a pair of pink one with gray pegging. Oh my god! I also remember the scarfs, you guys looked great!

I found the Student Dress code in the Student Handbook.  Thank you Edie for keeping this book all these years!  Here is what is stated in the handbook.

All Students are encouraged to dress neatly.  Girls are to refrain from wearing babushkas or scarfs on their heads and having their hair in pin curls.  Slacks, Bermudas, and other similar apparel are not to be worn by girls during the regular school hours.  Jackets and other outdoor wearing apparel are not to be worn by boys or girls while attending classes.

That is all that they have written in the hand book on the dress code.  Well, we can now see that it is the girls who had all the rules to follow.  No equal rights here.  Times sure have changed.  I think I read in the dress codes this year that there are a lot rules for the guys about their pants hanging so low and what is written on the Tee shirts.

This handbook has everything -- Leaving school,  Students hours, Student Parking, Tardiness, ID cards, Hall Passes, Book Store, Student Driving Regulations, Cafeteria, Smoking, Lockers, Snowballing, Telephones, and the best one is -Fraternities, Soroites & Secret Societies (Unlawful).  These rules are all good and funny so, I'll save them for the reunion and post them on the memory board.  Maybe I'll see if we can get some put in the memory book too.

Patti

If  I remember right, there was an area outside that you could smoke in. That may have been available in my early years at THS, maybe l958 or 1959, or was I just dreaming?

10/02/13 10:52 PM #175

Marilyn Rouen (Dimitroff)

Cathy, I don't remember being able to smoke outside but when we went out for lunch everybody lit up.  I had to air out my folk' s car on the way back to school by driving with the windows down, even in winter.   Which reminds me of a pajama party at my house where we all smoked in the basement and then sprayed my mom's perfume to cover it up.  Really clever huh?  The next morning I think I was grounded for a week.

And Patti I had black gumdrop shoes too.  I remember those long skirts and rolling them up at the waist.  I guess we were skinny eough that it worked!

Patricia Veresan (Hughet)

I'll ask Edie when she recieved this book.   In the Handbook there is a lot of information on NO smoking in school or on the school grounds. If you violate the rule you will be suspended for one week.  For the 2nd day of supension you and your parent had to meet with the principal.  You had to also do an assignment and turn it in before you came back to class. A second offense of smoking will result in indefinite expulsion of the student. Readmittance only by a petition before a joint faculty-administration committee.  I guess that means there was no room or area out side to smoke.

I think when I was in 7th and 8th grade I would see these older boys going behind the swimming pool to smoke.  I don't know if it was designated, or they were just ignored. I think I asked my brother about this and he told me that's where they were going.

I don't know when I got the handbook, maybe every year, I really don't remember.  It is fun to look back and see what was in it.  I also have the course offerings and graduation requirements.  Patti did I give you those too?

The course offerings & graduation requirements are on the website in the school pictures.  I got them from Edie.

Thank you Edie for saving all the THS goddies.  I don't remember ever getting hand book.  Yes, You gave me the class requirements to graduate and the classes you could take.  We can make these larger and put them up for classmates to read.  All of the stuff you gave me is very interesting, and I plan to use all of it.  Reading this stuff makes me feel old when you see how kids dress today and what they get away with now.  I'm sure the classmates at the reunion will have a blast from the past reading all this stuff.

Thanks for posting the information about Paul, Carol (Strucel) Rohlinger's husband.  Carol called me yesterday and told me about Paul.  I called her this morning and we had long talk on the phone.  Carol and I attended St. Suzanne's elementary school together in Detroit for 3rd and 4th grade.  My parents moved us to Redford Township that summer. To my amazement, Carol Strucel was walking down the street on the first day of school that following year. We attended Shear School and walked to school together the next 8 years.  We both stood up for each others weddings. We have kept in touch through thick and thin.  Paul was a wonderful, caring and very giving person with a great sense of humor, he will be dearly missed.

Bill C, I used to go to Todd's too. With Frank Loutzenhiser and a couple other guys. Peg pants with a comb pocket. I always think of that when I hear Bob Seegar singing Night Moves.

I was never allowed to wear my Sunday shirt to school, it was for Sunday and visiting family only.
