Tom Alexander and classmate Jim Samuelsen were best friends.  They were in Vietnam at the same time and Tom, according to Jim's memory, risked his life to travel to where Jim was serving in order to see him.  They both returned home and remained great friends.  Tom died May 2009 in a crashed airplane that he built.
