BLACK,  RICHARD DOUGLAS "DICK"             Basketball
 Inducted into the Lyman County Athletic Hall of Fame at Presho  February, 2007

1945-49 Richard "Dick" Black was a prolific basketball player for Reliance High School from 1945-49. As a 4-yr starter on the Longhorns basketball teams, Dick averaged over 20 points per game. In two memorable games in 1949, he scored 44 points against Ft. Thompson, and 28 points in a win over Chamberlain. Black was among the first players in South Dakota to shoot the revolutionary "one-handed"  jump-shot! Previously, most players had launched the "two-handed" set-shot. Following graduation, Dick received a Basketball scholarship to Kansas St. After one season, he transferred to USD, playing three seasons for the Coyotes. 

Lt. Black completed two years in the US Army, then accepted a coaching position at Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores, MI. He served as their head Basketball Coach for 27 years, and as Athletic Director for 32 years. He was inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1985.

1949 Graduate of Reliance High School 1945-49, 4-year starter, 9th grade: 18 point average, 10th grade: 20 point average; 11th & 12th grade: 25 point average, 1949 scored 44 points in one game with Ft. Thompson, 1949  Scored 28 points in a 51-30 defeat of Chamberlain High School; 1949-1950;  1950-1953 Basketball scholarship to Kansas State University; Transferred to the University of South Dakota and played three seasons.

*Coach/teacher at Java High School, Java, S.D. First Lieutenant U.S. Army, Ft. Benning, GA. Physical training instructor, the infantry school, Ft. Benning.
*Head Basketball coach and teacher at Lakeview High School, St. Clair Shores, Michigan. 386 wins 184 losses in 27 years at Lakeview High School. Athletic Director at Lakeview High School, St. Clair Shores, Michigan.
*Inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame.
*Inducted into the Macomb County Coaches Hall of Fame. One of the first inductees to receive this honor.
*Retired from Lakeview High School after 37 years at this school. Athletic complex named the Richard Black Complex.
*Honored by the University of South Dakota as a Distinguished Graduate.

Inducted into Lyman County Athletic Hall of Fame at Presho, Feb, 2009

In basketball, Byre led the 1955 Longhorns to 29 wins and only three losses and as a senior, the 1956 District Champion Longhorns won 28 games with just two losses.

Victories during the ‘56 season included winning Championships of the CBH and Medicine Creek Conference tournaments, and the Presho and Vivian Invitational tournaments.

A pure shooter, Elton scored over 1200 points during his junior and senior seasons, averaging over 20 points per game. In his senior season Byre scored 30 or more points eight times and in one game collected 30 rebounds. No All-State teams were chosen, however, a group of coaches chose Byre as one of the top three players in South Dakota.

Byre was a four year starter at DWU and was named to the SDIC All-Conference team in 1958, ’59 and ‘60. The DWU and SDIC Hall of Famer was the SDIC scoring Champ in 1959, averaging 19.6 per game and also led the league in free throws in 1959 and 1960. Following his graduation, Mr. Byre taught and coached at Chamberlain seven years, coaching the Cubs into their first State Class A Tournament in 1965. Byre then taught and coached at Sioux Falls Washington for nine years, coaching several Warrior teams into the State A Tournament.

FLETCHER, RANDY                                             Basketball
Inducted into Lyman County Athletic Hall of Fame at Presho, Feb, 2009

Randy Fletcher, a 1965 Reliance High School graduate, was a legendary basketball player and all-around athlete for the Longhorns. In track, Randy placed fifth in the 1964 State Cross Country event and in 1965, he placed third in the State Pole Vault. In basketball, after lettering as an eighth grader, Fletch became a four year starter, dominating games as a scorer, rebounder and defensive stalwart. Fletcher, who averaged 27 points as a junior and 33 points per game as a senior, including 63 points in a single game, a feat acknowledged by Sports Illustrated's “Faces In The Crowd”. Randy scored over 1900 points for the Longhorns and remains in the top 25 of Class B scoring. The ‘65 Longhorn’s were undefeated in the regular season and Fletcher was named to the All-State Team. 

Attending Dakota Wesleyan on a basketball scholarship, he was a four year starter and had a career average of 18 points per game. Randy’s total of 1829 points was the school record in 1969. Fletch was All-SDIC in 1967, ’68 and ‘69, and named All-District 12 in 1968 an ’69 and was an Honorable Mention All-America. Upon his graduation, his number “22” was retired by the Tigers. He is a member of the DWU and SDIC Hall’s of Fame. Mr. Fletcher taught and coached at Lennox High School from 1969-2003, including three years as varsity basketball coach.

Randy has refereed basketball and football for 30 years, played amateur ball for 15 years and, as a golfer, was NAIA District 12 runner-up and was a State Match Play Medalist in 1974.

Randy played teener baseball for the Kennebec Teener’s and was selected as a pickup pitcher/catcher by Tyndall, who then won the State Teener Championship.

 Inducted into Lyman County Athletic Hall of Fame at Presho

Duane Frame, a 1960 graduate of Reliance High School, and Mike Ambur became the first two inductees into the Lyman County Track Hall of Fame in ceremonies May 3 at Presho. Frame’s accomplishments include: 1959 –Cross-country champ; 3rd fastest in the nation for 2.5 mile distance. Placed 4th, 2nd and 2nd in the mile run in 1958, 1959 and 1960 State Track Meet; held the regional mile trophy 10 years and held 12 records in his career.

Duane served in the US Army from Dec. 1963 to Dec. 1965, and returned home to the family farm until his passing in April of 2006.
