
Carroll Stewart 1927-2009 
Funeral services for Carrol I. Stewart, 82, of Reliance will be Friday, Nov. 20, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Reliance, with burial in the Reliance Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7p.m. at the Hickey-Wevik Funeral Chapel, Chamberlain.
Carrol Ivan Stewart was born to R.W. and Veva Lois (Rockafellow) Stewart on Jan. 12, 1927, on the Jesse Wilbur Stewart homestead seven miles south of Reliance. In 1933, at the age of six, he started grade school at West Cooper School. Carrol attended high school and graduated from Reliance High School in 1944.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army and left on a troop train to Fort Snelling from Reliance in June 1944. After serving in Germany he was Honorably Discharged in June 1946. He worked on the family farm until 1948, when he enrolled at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell in pre-engineering classes.
Sept. 7, 1950, Carrol was united in marriage to Dorothy Iline Hoffer. To this union, nine children were born. They farmed three miles south of Reliance where he raised hogs, cattle, grains, and hay. Carrol was a Boy Scout leader and a member of the American Legion receiving his 60 year pin in 2007. He was also in the C.B. Club and H.A.M. Radio Club.
Carrol remained an active farmer until retiring in 2000. Some of Carrol’s hobbies were hunting, gun collecting, woodworking, blacksmithing, electronics, welding and building things. Carrol enjoyed people and visiting with friends and family. He had a memory bank that would not quit. He could recall people, places and historic events.
Carrol passed away Nov. 15, 2009, at Sanford Mid Dakota Medical Center in Chamberlain at 82 years of age.
Gratefully sharing his life are his wife Dorothy of Reliance; children Eileen Wheeler and husband Jack, Box Elder, SD; Leland Stewart, Oacoma; Marilyn Robinson and husband DeeJay, Great Falls, MT; Douglas Stewart, Reliance; Donna Stewart, Olympia, WA; Gordon Stewart, Rapid City; Steven Stewart, Reliance; Dennis Stewart and wife Carol, Avon, SD; brothers Robert Stewart and wife Gladys, Reliance and Lyle Stewart and wife Mary, Johnson, NE; 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and many, many friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother Dean and daughter Alice.
