     Charles Merle Bingen, 62, died Feb. 1, 2010 at Sanford Hospital in Vermillion after a long struggle with pain resulting from a work-related accident (July 2008).

      Charles was born to Charles H. and Evelyn Bingen in Presho on June 2, 1947. He was one of five children. Charles graduated from Presho High School in 1965 and continued his education at the University of South Dakota (1994-1998). He married Jan (Larsen) in 1971 in Vermillion, where they made their home. Charles spent most of his life working in construction and as a heavy equipment operator.

     His greatest joy in life was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed classic cars, hunting and auctions.

     Charles is survived by his wife, Jan; and five sons, Charles (wife Kate and four children), Christopher “Kip” (wife Deana and five children), Michael (three children) and Erik (Amanda Granaas), all of Vermillion, and Chad (two children) of Casper, WY; as well as his sister, Gail Byre, Mason City, IA; Kent Bingen, Rapid City and Joel (wife Kim), Lead.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Randy and brother-in-law Dale Byre.

     A 7 p.m. prayer service will be held at Iverson-Sieke-Kober Funeral Home (402 E. Main Street, Vermillion), with an open viewing from 5 to 7 p.m. The family will be present from 6 to 7 p.m.

     Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 816 E. Clark, Vermillion, starting at 2 p.m., with a reception following at the church.
