William Cullen  August 10, 1910- August 5, 1993.   

Funeral service for William ‘Babe’ Cullen, 82, was held August 9, 1993 at St. James Catholic Church, Chamberlain.  Father Howard Melzer officiating.  Babe died August 5, 1993 at Mid Dakota Hospital.

He was born August 10, 1910 to William V. and Mary (Lorang) Cullen at Reliance.  He attended Reliance schools and graduated from Reliance High School and then attended Columbus College, Sioux Falls. 

August 17, 1936 he married  Irene Murphy at Reliance.  They farmed near Reliance from 1937 until 1952, when they purchased the Rainbow Café and moved to Chamberlain.  They operated the Rainbow for 26 years.

He was a board member of th South Dakota Restaurant Association; an Honorary member of the Kiwanis, and a member of The Knights of Columbus.  He was an active member of St. James Catholic Church.

Besides his wife Irene, he is survived by one son, Dennis Cullen of Philadelphia, PA, and three daughters; Corrine Leiferrman, Chamberlain, Judy Hanson, Minneapolis, MN., and Vicci Haeseker, DeKalb, Il; 16 grandchildren 14 great-grandchildren.  

He was preceded in death by both parents, two brothers, Louis and Francis, and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Wermers.

Internment was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetary in Reliance.  Wevik Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Frances Stallman (King) (1957)

Babe and Irene Cullen were a huge influence on my life. I worked for them at 'the rainbow cafe' most of my teen age years, rented a room in their basement during the summertimes. They were both an insiration to me. frances
