Evert G. Fletcher  1914-2002

Evert G. Fletcher, 87, died January 6, 2002 at his daughter's home in Reliance. Funeral services will be Friday, January 11, 2002 at 2pm at the United Methodist Church in Reliance.  The Reverend Stephen Perry will be officiating.  Burial will be in the Reliance Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, January 10th at The Wevik Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7pm.

Evert was born April 22, 1914 at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to parents William and Lillian Fletcher.  As an infant the family moved to the Reliance area.  

Evert attended country school and  graduated from Reliance High School in 1932.  He worked for the C.C.C. and on February 1, 1938, was united in marriage to Margery Mae Black in Murdo, SD.  He worked at various jobs in the early '40's until they purchased a farm south of Reliance. 

In 1953, they moved into the town of Reliance.  Around 1960, they purchased Fletcher's Trading Post in Lower Brule, which they owned and operated until the Corps of Engineers flooded the river.  In 1965, Evert worked for the Lower Brule Housing Authority.  Around 1981, Evert retired from the Housing Authority but continued to do carpentry, remodeling, and handyman work in the Reliance area.

For many years, Evert was a Boy Scout Leader. He coached Little League baseball, served on the Reliance Town Council and was a member of the Reliance School Board.  He really enjoyed fishing, dancing, and playing a good game of cards.  

In 1986, Evert suffered a stroke and for the past six years has resided with his daughter, Lori and her husband, Denny, so they could take care of him.

Evert is survived by his two sons: Randy Fletcher and his wife Glenda of Lennox,  Steve Fletcher and his wife Delilah of Renner; four daughters: Marjo Crain and husband Maurice of Brookings, Patty Weber and her husband Don of Pasadena, CA., Penny Marsh and her husband Jerry of Reliance, and Lori Marsh and her husband Denny of Reliance; four brothers: Cliff Fletcher, Alliance, NE., Laurel Fletcher, Tucson, AZ., Dick Fletcher, Houston, TX., and Larry Fletcher, St.Paul, MN.; 17 grandchildren & 16 great grandchildren.

Evert was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Margery, on July 14, 1999;  one daughter, Bonnie, and three sisters.
