Gordon Hall - Class Of 1932

Gordon Hall

Gordon Hall, 97

Gordon Hall, 97, of Lochbuie, and formerly of Pierre, SD, passed away quietly at home in Lochbuie, CO on October 10, 2012. A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kennebec Cemetery in Kennebec, South Dakota. Under the direction of Isburg Funeral Chapel.

He was born October 24, 1914 in Reliance, SD to Asal and Blanche (Simons) Hall, the second child of four.  Gordon graduated from Reliance High School in 1932 with the special award of second place in the state competition, playing his trumpet.  He then left Reliance to go to Barber College in Omaha, NE in the late 1930’s.

He then met and married Lorraine Wright in 1940, the same day he took the South Dakota Barber Test.  He worked for Barbers in Kimball and Presho, SD for one year, then for shops in Kennebec in three different places on Main Street.

Times were tough as Gordon and Lorraine started their family, with Norma Jean first, then Lois in 1943, Marilyn in 1945 and last but not least, their son, Dean Gordon Hall, Jr.

Gordon did a lot of work as a barber in the Reliance, Kennebec and Presho areas.  He was also the Fire Chief in 1952, while getting ready to move to Pierre to take on two Star Mail Routes, one to Kadoka and the other to Selby.  When he lost that bid, he worked at Capital City Gas in Pierre for 6-7 years.  He then went to work on the Oahe Dam as a carpenter.

Over the years in Pierre, Gordon had seven different horses.  He loved riding them at the Ft. Pierre Sale Barn.  But the best day at the Sale Barn was when Baxter Black asked to ride his "Big Red" horse.  Gordon and Baxter became friends and would see each other when Gordon made trips to Colorado.

Gordon left this world to join his family, sister, Leota Hall Chandler; brothers, Dale W. Hall and Wendell L. Hall; daughter, Norma Jean Hall Staven; grandson, Michael Staven and both parents.

He leaves behind his wife of 72 ½ years, Lorraine; daughters, Lois Hall and Marilyn Davis, both of Lochbuie, CO; son, Dean(Kay) Hall, Jr. of Walsenburg, CO; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren and two special nephews, Dennis Hall of Mitchell, SD and Steve (Ruth) Hall of Bettendorf, IA.  Other survivors include his sister-in-law, Bertha Hegregurg and family, of Wilmer, MN.
