Mer'e Rosalie Hickey Nichols 1917-2001

Mer'e Rosalie Nichols, 83, Oacoma, died February 14, 2001 at  Sunset Valley Nursing Home in Chamberlain.  Funeral Services were held saturday, February 17, 2001 at St. James Catholic Church with Father Tony Kelly, S.C.J. officiating.  Burial was in  Riverview Cemetery.

Mer'e Rosalie Hickey was born May 9, 1917 at Kennebec to parents George W. and Julia (King) Hickey.  She attended grade school in Oacoma and Chamberlain area.  She graduated from Reliance High School in 1935.  

Rosalie worked for the Civil Service during World War II in Des Moines, Iowa.  She returned to Oacoma where she married Mr. Henry Kasuske Jan. 3, 1946 at Pierre.  They then purchased and operated Henry's Cafe in Platte from 1946 to 1950.  They returned to Oacoma where Mr. Kasuske was Postmaster until his death in 1958.  

She attended Black Hills Teacher College in Spearfish and graduated from Southern State Teachers College at Springfield.  She taught school in Sioux Falls and also country schools in Lyman County.  

On November 17, 1960, she was united in marriage to Lawrence A. Nichols at Chamberlain.  They farmed southwest of Kimball until his death, August 3, 1979.  She moved to Mitchell  and lived there until returning to Oacoma in 1989.  In 1995, she moved to the Riverview Retirement Home until February, 2001.

She is survived by one sister, Eleanor 'Lee' Gilbert of Bethpage, Tennessee; four nieces and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, two brothers, one niece and one nephew.
