Bernard P. Lippens 1917-2008


Bernard P. Lippens, age 91, died September 21, 2008 after a long illness.

Bernard was born August 13, 1917 to Charlie and Johanna Lippens in Reliance, S.D. In 1935 he graduated from Reliance High School and joined the Army. During World War II he was stationed at Camp Adiar, Oregon and served with the 96th Army Division in the South Pacific. He held a Purple Heart for wounds he received in action and was a member of Chamberlain Veterans of Foreign Wars.

On February 4, 1946 he married Audrey Filer of Dayton, Oregon, she passed away January 18, 2006.

Bernard worked on the Milwaukee Railroad and was section foreman living in Vivian and Chamberlain.

After retiring they moved to McMinnville, Oregon in 1981 to be near Audrey’s mother and sister. Bernard enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, sharing his abundant vegetable crops with relatives, friends and neighbors. He was always helping others when he saw a need. 

Both Audrey and Bernard were cremated and will have a private family service at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon on October 24.

Preceding him in death were his parents and sister Bertha McManus, Reliance. Survivors include sister-in-law Charlotte Filer, McMinnville, nephews Bernie McManus, Michigan, Larry McManus, Pukwana, Ronald McManus, Reliance, nieces Sheila Pedersen, Nebraska and Sharon Forthum, Iowa.
