Arlyne Carey (Lafferty)

 Arlyne N. Carey Lafferty 1917-1999

Funeral services for Arlyne N. Lafferty, 81, White Lake, formerly of Reliance, were held friday, February 5th, at 2pm at the United Methodist Church in Reliance, with the Rev. Wayne Tieszen officiating.  Mrs. Lafferty passed away Monday, February 1, 1999, at the Aurora Brule Nursing Home in White Lake.

Arlyne N. Carey was born April 17, 1917, at Spencer, to John and Nora (Russell) Carey.  She attended grade school in Spencer and completed two years at Farmer High School.  In 1934 she moved with her family to Reliance.  She graduated from Reliance High School as salutatorian, in 1936.

She then attended Wessington Springs Junior College and received her teaching certificate.  She then returned to Reliance and stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Bill McManus while she taught in the Dirkstown School District for three years.

During this time, she was united in marriage to Arnold Lafferty April 24, 1939 in Gann Valley.  They lived in Lyman for one year,  and in 1940, they moved to Hyde County, where they both taught school.  Around 1942, they returned to the Reliance area where Arnold took over his father's farm and Arlyne began teaching at Fort Thompson Public School.  She was then employed in the Middle School Library in Chamberlain and later taught Junior High School. In about 1982, she retired from full time teaching.

She served as treasurer of the United Methodist Church and also Sunday School Superintendant.  She was secretary of the UMW, and promoted the Vacation Bible School Program.

She was president of the Cowbelles, helped organize and develop the Cancer Crusade in the eastern part of Lyman County and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

On January 17, 1998, Arlyne suffered a stroke, and in March she became a resident of the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake.  Arlyne will be missed by a host of friends she made while teaching in the communities she taught.  Arlyne always enjoyed children, shown by her devotion in her teaching.  She had a special love for her family.

She is survived by her husband, Arnold, two sons, Dale and wife, Judy, and Dallas and wife Cherie, all of Reliance; one daughter Karla, and husband Tom Feltman of Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one great-grandson, one brother and four sisters.

Wevik Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
