Reno - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sandra "Sandy" Lee Oetjen in Reno on December 14, 2017 at the age of 69. Sandy was born in Reno on December 6, 1948 to William and Adelma Hiett. She graduated from Reno High School and attended the University of Nevada, Reno. She is a graduate of the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. Sandy will be remembered for her grace and her care for those in her family and community.
Sandy worked in medical records and real estate before transitioning to trust management in 1990. In 1997, she moved to Las Vegas where she worked for Wells Fargo as a Certified Trust & Financial Advisor until her retirement in 2012. Her true calling, though, was to serve others through her church. Sandy was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church in 2006. She served All Saints' Episcopal Church, where she was involved in numerous programs including the church school, community ministry, and she served briefly as a Deacon Administrator. She approached all of her duties as a deacon with great zeal, whether it was taking communion to community members, reading the Gospel on Sundays, or serving on the state Commission on Ministry. Everyone with whom she served appreciated her poised, thoughtful, and generous nature. In addition to her spiritual work, she found time to pursue many hobbies including square dancing, bowling, traveling in her RV, and doting on her rescue dogs.
Sandy was preceded in death by her mother Adelma Hiett (Gasparri) and her step-son Curtis Oetjen. She is survived by her husband of 27 years Jack Oetjen, father William Hiett, brother Ray Hiett (Nancy), and sister Roberta Duskin all of Reno, her son Mark Jordan (Anne) of Seattle, her step-daughters Cherie Rice (Johnny) of Navarre, FL, Michelle Oetjen of Reno, her step-son Jason Oetjen (Suzanne) of Reno, and her grandchildren Leo Jordan and Mia Oetjen.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 22 at 6:30 pm at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 200 Island Ave., Reno.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her memory to the Cathedral Chapter of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.
