After graduating from Manchester, I went to Virginia Tech (BS in mechanical engineering) and Penn State (MS, PhD Biomedical Engineering). I left central Pennsylvania in 1991 for Austin, Texas to work at Carbomedics, a company that developed and manufactured artificial heart valves. After 11 years (and nearing the end of the company), I left my adopted home of Texas and relocated in Bethesda, Maryland to work for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a program officer. At NIH, I oversaw grants and contract programs involving cutting edge research on cardiovascular devices and technologies such as stents, heart valves, circulatory support devices, and robotic surgical tools (which is all supported by your federal tax dollars!). I decided to leave NIH in 2018 and move to the FDA where I work on regulating cardiovascular devices instead of funding research for them. I currently am leading reviews of circulatory support devices used to treat a wide range of types of heart failure and I work with an incredible team.
I met my wonderful wife, June, in Austin. We went on our first date in December of 1993 and married in August, 1994. Rachel, my stepdaughter, made us an instant family and our daughter, Megan, was born in 1996. Both are wonderful women. Rachel is a surgeon at Emory in Atlanta where she is a 4th year resident. She is a Texas Longhorn through-and-through, but became a huge Baltimore Ravens fan when getting her Masters of Public Health degree at Johns Hopkins. Megan graduated from the University of Delaware in 2018 and earned her masters degree at the University of Loyola (MD) in 2020. She is now is now a Speech Language Pathologist in Fort Worth, Texas. June is an incredibly sought-after self-employed medical writer and loves to knit, quilt, and kayak.
I many of you know, I developed Type 1 diabetes in 1983 and am still doing well with it. I’m still racing bikes and spend way too much time in the saddle. Besides the racing, I’ve had some great trips to ride in France, southern California and Italy over the past few years.
June and I are both active in our church (Rock Creek Church, Rockville, MD) and continue to be greatly blessed though our friends, family, health, and jobs.
